Maslenitsa, or Shrovetide, is one of the most cheerful holidays in Russia celebrating the end of winter. Originally a pagan celebration remembering the dead, it evolved into a festive occasion marked by activities like sledding, blini eating, and fist fights. The rituals of Maslenitsa combine winter's end with the beginning of spring in hopes of a bountiful harvest, and feature the burning of a Lady Maslenitsa effigy.
