Kwiizya is a low-cost cellular network that provides voice and text messaging services to remote areas using existing unmodified mobile phones and SIM cards. It utilizes free open-source software components including OpenBTS, FreeSwitch, Sipauthserve and SMQueue. The system was deployed in Macha, Zambia where residents have limited or no cellular coverage. Evaluation of the deployed system showed it could reliably deliver SMS messages and support voice calls with quality within acceptable standards for delay, jitter and packet loss.
