During commissioning of a large petrochemical plant in the UK, two electric motor-driven pumps were damaged overnight. Data from continuous online monitoring systems linked to GE's System 1 software showed the pumps had run at extremely high speeds in the reverse direction, likely caused by backwards fluid flow due to faulty check valves. Without this data, the pumps would have been replaced without identifying the root cause, risking further damage costing $40,000. Continuous monitoring helped identify the issue and avoid unnecessary costs and downtime.

The document summarizes findings from two rounds of testing of data cables imported into the North American market by the Communications Cable & Connectivity Association (CCCA). In the first round in 2008, 9 cable samples failed physical and electrical requirements, and 4 out of 5 riser cables and all 4 plenum cables failed fire safety tests. In the second round in 2009 testing 7 of 8 cables failed, including fire safety failures of cables from manufacturers that failed previously. The conclusions are that some manufacturers are still circumventing quality control and importing sub-standard, non-compliant cables that pose public safety concerns.
This document discusses technical evaluation in CPV (concentrated photovoltaic) systems. It outlines Mott MacDonald's role as an independent engineer in conducting technical due diligence and assessing the bankability of CPV technologies. The technical due diligence process for CPV systems must go beyond standard PV modules to also evaluate the quality control and integration of the entire CPV system, including optics, tracking systems, and performance over long periods of operation. Achieving a 'bankable' status for CPV remains challenging due to the lack of extensive operational data from different locations, but compliance with quality and performance standards as well as independent review and testing can help boost investor and lender confidence in CPV technologies.
Offshore Wind Energy: Improving Project Development and Supply Chain Processe...Stavros Thomas
This project scopes to investigate, analyze and implement lean technologies and methods to improve project
development efficiency and provide cost reductions in offshore wind energy investments. Logically all products
and services in the wind power industry involve a supply chain structure. Some of these upstream entities
and activities located inside this multi-directional framework are completely independent-autonomous of one
another while some are interrelated. This process through manufacturing, distribution, installation and operation
creates waste in terms of process time, cost and quality of service. Lean principles-when implemented-work
together to identify, mitigate or even eliminate the waste produced during the life-cycle of a wind power project
and simplify the processes with the highest value and quality. Through a complete lifecycle analysis and under
the plethora of the integrated supply chain processes, this project focuses on developing innovative solutions
and procedures to optimise offshore wind plants installation, operation and maintenance (O&M) as well as
decommissioning-repowering. Finally a set of tools and methodologies to remove supply chain bottlenecks,
address the associated transport, logistics and equipment challenges and improve project management are also
presented. It has been shown that the wastes such as inventory costs and defects have been reduced which
improves the overall project feasibility.

Good morning and welcome back to Energy Source, coming to you from New York, where the city swelters in its first heatwave of the season.
Nearly 80 million people were under alerts in the US north-east and midwest yesterday as temperatures in some municipalities reached record highs in a test to the country’s rickety power grid.
In other news, the Financial Times has a new Big Read this morning on Russia’s grip on nuclear power. Despite sanctions on its economy, the Kremlin continues to be an unrivalled exporter of nuclear power plants, building more than half of all reactors under construction globally. Read how Moscow is using these projects to wield global influence.
Today’s Energy Source dives into the latest Statistical Review of World Energy, the industry’s annual stocktake of global energy consumption. The report was published for more than 70 years by BP before it was passed over to the Energy Institute last year. The oil major remains a contributor.
Data Drill looks at a new analysis from the World Bank showing gas flaring is at a four-year high.

New report offers sobering view of the energy transition
Every year the Statistical Review of World Energy offers a behemoth of data on the state of the global energy market. This year’s findings highlight the world’s insatiable demand for energy and the need to speed up the pace of decarbonisation.
Here are our four main takeaways from this year’s report:
Fossil fuel consumption — and emissions — are at record highs
Countries burnt record amounts of oil and coal last year, sending global fossil fuel consumption and emissions to all-time highs, the Energy Institute reported. Oil demand grew 2.6 per cent, surpassing 100mn barrels per day for the first time.
Meanwhile, the share of fossil fuels in the energy mix declined slightly by half a percentage point, but still made up more than 81 per cent of consumption.

3. Background for optimization of the supply chain
• Industrial standards have developed significantly since nuclear standards were developed - the quality development of
other industries hasn’t been exploited enough
• Several suppliers of SSC equipment currently installed in nuclear facilities do not exist anymore or have stopped
producing
• The nuclear supply chain is thin and the interest to deliver to nuclear has decreased
– New suppliers are not familiar with nuclear requirements
– Potential new suppliers are not interested because the market is too small.
– Nuclear requirements are too difficult to comply with
– The economic risk of supplying SSC equipment to the nuclear industry as too high.
• The heavy licensing process is challenging in modernization of ageing components and systems

10. KELPO – key development areas
• Utilize high-quality standard equipment manufactured,
tested, inspected and documented according to normal,
well-known industry standards.
• Harmonized practices and documentation between
license holders Clear and harmonized requirements
towards suppliers.
• Increased license holder’s role in lower safety classes -
Regulatory control focus on plant overall safety and
SC1 and SC2 equipment.
PILOTING:
• Joint effort of license holders and
STUK.
• Test and further develop the
proposed new licensing and
qualification processes.
• Identify change needs in regulations
and company practices.
STUK’s new strategy:
“Safety is not achieved through control, but as a result of good work of responsible operators.”
