พิจารณาวิธีการรักษาโดยดูจากระดับความรุนแรงของโรคตามตารางที่ 2
จักษุแพทย์อาจพิจารณาทำ fluorescein angiography เพื่อช่วยในการวินิจฉัย และรักษา
ได้ตามความเหมาะสม แบ่งการรักษาได้เป็น
1. การรักษาโดยเลเซอร์ (Laser photocoagulation)
มีด้วยกัน 3 วิธี คือ
1. panretinal (scatter) photocoagulation สำหรับผู้ป่วยในระยะ PDR เพื่อป้องกัน
หรือยับยั้งเส้นเลือดผิดปกติที่งอกใหม่บนจอตา (neovascularization on retina surface) หรือ
เส้นเลือดผิดปกติที่งอกใหม่บนม่านตา (neovascularization on iris; NVI) สำหรับระยะ severe
NPDR พิจารณาให้การรักษาในกรณีที่การตรวจติดตามลำบาก หรือการควบคุมเบาหวานไม่ดี หรือมี
การคุกคามของเบาหวานที่จอตาอย่างรวดเร็ว
2. focal laser photocoagulation สำหรับรักษา microaneurysm ที่มีการรั่วซึม

CSME หมายถึง Clinically significant macular edema ตามการศึกษาวิจัยของ ETDRS
* อาจพิจารณาตรวจติดตามให้ถี่กว่านี้ ขึ้นกับการพิจารณาของแพทย์ เช่น เมื่อมีการควบคุมเบาหวานที่ไม่ดี
‡ หากจุดกลางของ macular ไม่บวม หรือบวม แต่ค่าสายตายังดีมาก อาจยังไม่พิจารณาทำเลเซอร์เฉพาะที่ได้
และการทำเลเซอร์ แม้อาจไม่ทำให้การมองเห็นดีขึ้น แต่ก็จะช่วยให้การมองเห็นคงที่ หรือมีโอกาสแย่ลงน้อยกว่า
ไม่ทำการรักษา
§ อาจพิจารณาทำเลเซอร์เฉพาะที่ ก่อนที่จะทำเลเซอร์แบบกระจาย เพื่อลดผลข้างเคียงของการทำเลเซอร์
แบบกระจายที่อาจทำให้เกิด macular edema
