ABSTRACT In this paper , the problem of identification of masses or tumors in the Magnetic
Resonance Image (MRI) of Brain . Here a novel method of Power Law Transformation is
introduced on the Brain Image. The gamma value for the Brain Image is fixed as 1.5 and
thresholding is done. Thus the resulting binary image clearly separates any kind of tumors or a
mass present in the brain images, and makes the identification process easier. By exhaustive
experimentations it is found that the proposed algorithm is performs well than the literature. The
experimentations is done with the Virtual Skeleton Database (VSD) which is a brain tumor image
dataset obtained from Challenge on Multimodal Brain Tumor Segmentation with are the outcomes
of BRATS2012 and BRATS2013. It is reported that the tumor in the brain is identified correctly in
majority of cases and the efficiency of the proposed algorithm is 90% in case of normal images
and 82.51% in case of multimodal images.

Neil Postman The End Of Education Summary
Introduction:
Education in today s day in age has evolved to become an intricate system of developing
individual knowledge on social values and academic knowledge in the context of a technologically
advanced global society.
Neil Postman in his book, The End of Education, argues that the educational crisis is complex and
that the technical problem of building academic skills is just a scratch in the surface. Postman
believed that schools focused more on teaching economic utility, consumerism, multiculturalism and
technology. Postman (1995) also claims that schools in their methods and practices do not
necessarily help students in preparing for economic life and that there was no evidence that a
quality schooling experience could be associated with positive economic productivity (p.28).
Moreover, Postman claims that the value of group cohesion and connectivity with peers is lost with
the individualization of computer learning (1995, p.45). Postman believed that learning to accept
the world with all its cultural rules, requirements, constraints, and even prejudices; is one of the two
things schools must be teaching. The second being, students developing skills to be critical
thinkers, which in turn makes them rational, independent minded and problem solving adults
(1995, p.60). Postman s views were that education with technology is teaching about how
technology assists and restricts students in doing positive or negative things, how education was
dealt with in the

Toothpaste Modern Toothpaste
Toothpaste is a paste or gel dentifrice used to clean and maintain the aesthetics and health of teeth.
Toothpaste use can promote good oral hygiene: it can aid in the removal of dental plaque and food
from the teeth, it can aid in the elimination and/or masking of halitosis, and it can deliver active
ingredients such as fluoride or xylitol to prevent tooth and gum disease (gingivitis). In most or all
developed countries, usage after each meal is encouraged. Most toothpastecontains chemicals which
are toxic when ingested, and is not intended to be swallowed.

Sodium fluoride (NaF) is the most common form; some brands use sodium monofluorophosphate
(Na2PO3F). Much of the toothpaste sold in the United States has 1000 to 1100 parts per million
fluoride ion from one of these active ingredients, in the UK the fluoride content is often higher, a
NaF of 0.32% w/w (1,450 ppm fluoride) is not uncommon. This consistency leads some to conclude
that cheap toothpaste is just as good as expensive toothpaste. When the magazine Consumer Reports
rated toothpastes in 1998, 30 of the 38 were judged excellent. Application of fluoride also prevents
moisture build up in some surfaces.[citation needed]
Other ingredients are less commonly used, including Hydroxyapatite nanocrystals and calcium
phosphate for remineralization,[6] and strontium chloride or potassium nitrate to reduce sensitivity.
[edit] Other ingredients
In addition to fluoride, the other fundamental ingredient in most toothpastes is an abrasive.[citation
needed] Studies have shown that abrasives in toothpaste reduce the time needed to remove plaque
from the teeth by approximately 50%. Abrasives, like the dental polishing agents used in dentist s
offices, also cause a small amount of enamel erosion which is termed polishing action. Some
brands contain powdered white mica which acts as a mild abrasive, and also adds a cosmetically
pleasing glittery shimmer to the paste. Many may contain frustules of dead

The Pros And Cons Of Belgian Federalism
Dr. Wilfried Swenden, a professor at Edinborough University in his research paper called Belgian
Federalism: Basic Institutional Features and Potential as a Model for the European Union , argues
that there are positive as well as negative aspects as Belgium as a federal state. The good things
about it is that it managed to lower the amount of tension between the different language speaking
groups. He supports it by stating that the amount of demonstrations has gone down since
federalization of the country and that that can be linked to the success of the government. One of
the critiques that is often raised that it is very costly. Certainly, the process itself costs money,
however, it could lower the expenses by stopping some of the costly proto federal practices aimed
at concealing disputes between the two Communitiesin a unitary context (Swenden, 2003). He also
argues that the state of public finance is better nowadays than in was before the reforms. One of his
strongest arguments is that people have actually started identifying more with Belgiumthan before
when they allowed to identify with their region too. Swenden calls it the Moreno question the share
of citizens who have been willing to shift their identity to the Belgian end of the continuum has
increased, rather than decreased over time (Swenden, 2003).
However, there are some disadvantages. Like that Belgium while having three regions and
communities is actually bipolar in character. The German speaking

Comparing Plato s Theaetetus, The Dialog Between Socrates...
Knowledge Defined as Justified True Belief
In Plato s Theaetetus, the dialog between Socrates and his student, Theaetetus, sets up the argument
that knowledge is true belief that is adequately justified. Although there are many examples that
prove Plato s suggestion, people such as Edmund Gettier have questioned and disproved the notion
of knowledge as justified true belief. In response to Gettier s findings, many have tried to modify
or find an alternative to the Justified True Belief model in search for the true definition of
knowledge. In this paper, I will outline and discuss Plato s Justified True Belief argument, outline
and discuss Gettier s response to Plato s argument, and lastly, present and analyze four solutions to
the Gettier problems.
1. Plato s Justified True Belief
In Plato s Theaetetus, Socrates starts his discussion by asking Theaetetus to define the word
knowledge. In response to Socrates question, Theaetetus responds by saying, geometry...cobblery,
and other craftsmen s arts...are nothing else but knowledge (Plato, 2). Though true, Plato is not
satisfied with Theaetetus definition of knowledge because it fails to address the core meaning of
the word. Plato is interested in understanding the definition of knowledge through conceptual
analysis understanding the minimum requirements for one to have knowledge, and avoiding
circularity in definitions. In order to define knowledge through conceptual analysis, Socrates and
Plato outline the argument as

Overpopulation And Pollution For The City Of An Ideal City
Today, the cities of this world are awesome, tall buildings, high rates of development and of
course, the overpopulation and pollution. To combat this major issue in the modern world, we
must put in a standardised city template that cities must follow so that they are able to cope with
the inevitable fact of evolution and the factors such as global warming (true or not), overpopulation
and pollution. The city, as described below, is an ideal city that this world needs to last.
To attain maximum efficiency and sustainability in the city, measure will be taken to ensure a
long life for the city. Implementing a high levy on all petrol and diesel vehicles and lower ones on
hybrid vehicles will retain the clean air of the city. Purchasing a full electric vehicle will see a 50%
incentive to the buyer. There will be more than enough infrastructure to house the electric vehicles
booming industry, including Continental s All New inroad wireless EV charging for charging
while parked and emergency chargers placed around rural roads in cases of empty batteries.
Infrastructure to accommodate Tesla s Supercharging Network for long range travel will be
placed to boost people taking the eco friendly option. There will be a Hyperloop in the ground to
transport people throughout the city and to and from other cities. Power will come from eco
friendly sources such as wind turbines upon a hill and solar energy plants upon the fields. There
will also be a large dam that the houses

The Changing Choice In The Kite Runner By Khaled Hosseini
Have you ever made a choice that has changed your life forever whether it was in a good or bad
way? Well one choice you make can change someone s life forever whether it s in a good way or
bad way. Here in America we mostly see one choice change our lives for the better like being in a
relationship, taking a job oppurtunity, going to college to get a career, all of these things change
our lives for the better. In afghanistan a lot of their choices change their lives for the worst such as
deciding not to follow their dress code, bullying others because of what they are, not following the
Taliban s rules that they have to follow or they would get hurt. Khaled Hosseinis, The Kite Runner,
teaches the reader that one choice can change your life forever through Amir letting Hassan get
bullied and Amir getting rid of Hassan.
In The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini the main character Amir makes a choice that changes
his life forever, which was to let Hassan get bullied and hurt by Assef. It was after the kite
running game Hassan left and nobody knew where he went. Amir was searching all over for
him and found him in an alley. In the alley Hassan was with Assef and Assefs friends, they were
bullying him. Amir was going to save him but did not. They just continued to bully Hassan and
eventually raped him because he was being rude to Assef and Amir just stood there and ran away.
Hosseini insist that, In the end i ran. I ran because I was a coward. I was afraid of Assef and what

One Of The Most Important Elements In Dracula

Quiz 2 on Dracula One of the most important elements in Dracula is imagery, and I believe Bram
Stroker uses sleeping to show weakness in his characters and to develop a sense of danger.
Uniquely, in the Victorian age, people believed a person s mind was only healthy when they were
asleep, and their bodies were safer when awake. Of course, this goes hand in hand with the story
so far in Dracula, because the majority of the danger in Dracula takes place at nighttime when
people are sleeping. Furthermore, I believe this may be why Stroker has placed such a big
emphasis on sleeping throughout Dracula; in fact, Stroker demonstrates how sleeping puts a person
in their most vulnerable state. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nay, let me warn you with all seriousness, that should you leave these rooms you will not by
chance go to sleep in any other part of the castle (34 35). From the start, Stroker tells Johnathan
Harker it is unwise to sleep anywhere in the castle, besides his room. Of course, this gives me an
unnerving feeling and a curious thought as to what else is in the castle, but I know it would be
wise for Harker to heed Dracula s words. In the end, Harker did not listen to Dracula s words and
he found himself in grave danger when he awoke to three blood thirsty women standing in the
same room he fell asleep in. However, Dracula stepped in and saved Harker, but I found out exactly
how weak a person is when they are asleep in an unsecured

Taking a Closer Look at Alzheimer s Disease Essay
What is Alzheimer s disease? Alzheimer s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia
known today. The term dementia refers to a variety of conditions that arise from the loss of nerve
cell function and/or nerve cell death in the brain, including Alzheimer s disease, vascular dementia,
Parkinson s disease, Creutzfeldt Jakob disease and other types of mixed dementia. Although all
types of dementia arise from neuronal damage and/or death, each form of dementia is associated
with distinct brain abnormalities and symptom patterns. Once a patient has been diagnosed with
dementia, a physician must conduct further tests in order to determine the exact form of dementia
that is present. Recent research indicates that many individuals,... Show more content on

How Did Nikola Tesla Contribute To The World
In 1884, Serbian migrant Nikola Tesla landed in America. Tesla was full of thoughts and ideas that
would eventually help the U.S.A as well as the rest of world. Nikola Tesla was the inventor of the
Alternating Current (AC) light and different power systems that are currently used all over the
world. Three of Nikola Teslas most well known and most useful inventions are:
1.Rotating magnetic field.
2.Wireless or radio broadcasts.
3.Wireless transmission of electricity to any point on the earth.
Before his arrival in the U.S., Nikola worked for a year at the French branch of the Edison Electric

Tesla worked for many months and solved the problems Edison was having with his devices.
Unfortunately, Edison did not pay Tesla and for a few thousand dollars they lost the ability to
acquire control of the greatest and one of the most profitable invention ever, (O Neill, p. 58).
Inventor and Westinghouse Company owner, George Westinghouse, brought Tesla s system to the
world. This started what became known in U.S. history as the War of the Currents, or the battles
between AC and DC. Westinghouse s choice to adopt Tesla s AC system changed the world forever.
Westinghouse offered to buy all the AC patents from Tesla for the staggering sum of 1 million
dollars cash and royalties of $1.00 per horsepower of electricity produced. This determination to
give the world AC, put Tesla and Westinghouse on a collision course with J.P. Morgan and Edison.
By 1897, the War of the Currents between AC and DC or between Westinghouse and Edison
continued unabated. In 1895, Tesla s laboratory in New York City was totally destroyed by

Chemical Reaction On Chemical Change
Analyzing chemical change
Abstract
Changes can be chemical or physical in nature. If a chemical change is taking place we will be
breaking bonds and forming new bonds and therefore creating a new substance. In a Physical
change we will have the same substance but simply in a new form. (Dickinson et al. 197). In
order to collect evidence to prove a chemical change is occurring we need a change in the
indicators. The more active a chemical is the more likely it will have a chemical reaction with
another chemical. (Dickinson et al. 180) The higher the element is on the Activity Series the more
reactive it is. (Dickinson et al. 192) A reactive element will replace an element that is underneath it
in the activity series. (Dickinson et al. 192) In this lab we will examine chemical reactions with the
activity series, indicators and the type of chemical reaction it is. The purpose of this lab is to
study chemical change and analyze why and how chemical reactions are created. In this lab we
are going to combine certain chemicals with each other to create a chemical change and we will
observe and record any changes. The chemical reactions listed in the Results had all gone through
chemical change and all the indicators have been recorded. Chemical change is very important and
we need to learn more about them because without chemical change we couldn t perform daily
tasks.

Essay Hydraulic Fracturing Must be Reformed
The multi billion dollar gas industry is seeking to expand its production across the nation, in light
of new technology making extracting natural gas much easier. A Healthy alternative to the fossil
fuels we so frivolously use is now more critical than ever. In 2011, the United States used 18.83
million barrels of raw oil daily, and in 2010 19.18 million barrels of petroleumproducts and
biofuels. In 2010 and 2011, that was nearly 22% of the world s oil supply. (U.S Department of

Her report used 24 case studies of shale gas regions in six states whose livestock have
experienced a wide range of neurological, reproductive, and gastrointestinal problems after
exposure to chemicals from fracking through water or air, accidentally or incidentally.
(Bamberger, 194) The livestock death toll is small when examined next to the nations livestock
in a whole, but the study shows that this may be a harbinger for the nations live food supply. In
northern Pennsylvania, a livestock population was examined where fracking wastewater was
exposed to 140 cattle, around 70 cows died, and the cattle that did survive, reproduced a slim
number of 11 calves, and within those 11 calves, only three survived. (Bamberger 195) This
study was done on a small portion of the nations cattle supply when examined, but empirical data
suggests that if fracking is expanded, so will the negative health effects of our food supply.
Within the Marcellus Shale region in western Pennsylvania, fracking chemicals were accidently
released into a pasture where one farm had their pregnant cows graze. Directly correlated to this,
over 50% of their calves were born dead. Within this study, cattle farmers in West Virginia, Texas,
and Colorado, also reported deaths of their livestock via fracking chemicals. (Bamberger 195)

American Honey Bees
Someone considers them dangerous because they use the sting as an extreme defense gesture that
costs them their lives. Someone, confusing them with the wasps, considers them harmful, believing
that they can ruin fruits with the jaws. Instead, bees are very important for the entire ecosystem and
for the human economy.
This genus of the Apidae family carries out an important work of pollinating a large variety of
plants, providing a great deal of food to man and other animals. Their function as a pollinator is
also fundamental in the agricultural sector so that many farmers require beekeepers to place
beehives during the flowering period, for example in Italy for almonds in the Sicily region and
apples in the Trentino Alto Adige region.
The best known product is honey, yet the beekeeping sector is much wider and represents a

Denmark
According to the UN M49, Denmark is a well developed country. A small but well functioning
country, in 2014 it has an estimated midyear population of 5.6 million people, and a GDP per

More, people are protected from infection with only 6% of the life years lost to premature death
being attributed to communicable diseases. Together, communicable diseases, maternal, perinatal,
and nutritional conditions account for only 7% of all deaths in the country. These can be attributed
to high levels of care for environmental and public health, which is also indicated by the fact that
roughly 100% of the Danish population has access to both clean water and improved sanitation,
both protective against communicable diseases.
Although Denmark has been remarkable in protecting its citizens from communicable diseases,
deaths resulting from injury, childhood deaths, and deaths connected to pregnancy, all people must
at some point die. As a result, 88% of life years lost to premature death in Denmark are the product
of long term, non communicable disease, which makes up 90% of all death in the country. Cancer
is the largest killer in Denmark, causing 32% of all deaths. This is followed by cardiovascular
disease, which leads to 26% of all deaths. Both can be at least partially attributed to relatively
high levels of obesity, with 18.7% of all men and 17.6% of all women being obese, with even
more being overweight. This is typical of developed countries as people become accustomed to
more sedentary lifestyles and high calorie foods.

Notes On Bloom s Connection Puzzles
Bloom s Connection Puzzles
a. The course content I would use this strategy for would be in Social Studies. However, this
concept could be applied to any area that would be taught in the eighth grade.
b. The learner will identify significant events, people, and documents in the major eras of United
States history.
c. This selected activity would work well for this content because it will allow the students to
explore different areas of a topic to help finish the puzzle. My thoughts are that this would be an
ongoing project that might take several days, weeks, or even the entire year as the students
explore United States history. My vision for this activity is to use puzzle pieces that are color
coded. One specific color for who, what, where, when, why, and how. The start of any puzzle
column could be any color and will be created by either the teacher or the student. The students and
teachers will then finish the puzzle column with as many different puzzle colors that are possible
that will help to explain the original puzzle piece. For instance, I might start with a who puzzle
piece with the name Rosa Parks. The students would then search that person to find how further
information to place on connecting color coded puzzle pieces. Another start might be a what with
Stamp Act written on it. The students would then find out further information to finish the puzzle.
Each column of the puzzle pieces would sit side by side to create a larger puzzle of our United

Nursing Constraints
Constraints are anything that limit or discourage certain movements at the same time they permit
or encourage other movements or shape the movement(s). 1 In light of that, when assessing the
constraints that may exist for this female patient there are three constraints that she will encounter:
individual constraints, environmental constraints, and task constraints. First, the individual
constraints exist within the patient herself (her own body). These constraints are related to her
structure (anatomical physiology, i.e. her height, weight, muscle mass, body size, etc.) and her
function (her behavior, attention, motivation). These constraints are all dependent on the patient
herself and how she is able to operate. In this case the patient has some stability and weakness
issues of the ankle joint of the involved limb. This will present a problem because she feels her
ankle giving way when she plays sports. This means her ankle muscles are weakened and unable
to support her body weight while running, jumping, and sharp agility movements when playing
volleyball, making her prone to re injury. If she re injures her ankle again she may face functional
constraints in being sad or depressed... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some environmental constraints that she may have to overcome are sociocultural in that she is
competitive and wants to be the best player on the team and/or wants to be the best team amongst
the team s competition. Another constraint is the slick surface of the volleyball court that presents
a fall risk when running and jumping on the court. If the lighting is too bright or not bright enough,
if the crowd is too distracting, or if the weather is bad and causes a delay, all these will present as
environmental constraints for her when playing

Osmosis in Potato Tubers
Osmosis in Potato Tubers
Andrew Dickson Background
When a plant cell is bathed in a solution of the same concentration (isotonic) as its intracellular
environment, its mass and volume remain the same. This is because water enters and leaves the
cells at the same rate. There is no net loss or gain of water by osmosis.
Samples of cells can be placed in a range of solutions of different concentration. The cells will gain
water by osmosis when placed in solutions which are more dilute (hypotonic) than the intracellular
environment. They will therefore gain mass. The cells will lose water in those solutions that are
more concentrated (hypertonic) than the intracellular environment and so lose mass. The
concentration of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some of the potatoes expanded and increased in mass whilst others shrunk and decreased in mass.
This was caused by the diffusion of water from the cells to the sucrose solution or vice versa
through the process of osmosis. During osmosis water will diffuse across a semi permeable
membrane from a region of low solute concentration to a region of high solute concentration.
The potato cylinders in both test tubes A and B with sucrose concentrations of 0% and 5%
respectively, had a noticeable increase in mass, whereas the potato in test tube C even though
having an increase in mass, was only marginal. This suggests that the sucrose concentration in test
tube C, which was 10%, is almost the same concentration (isotonic) as the potato s cells
intracellular environment because the mass remains relatively the same. This is because the
movement of water into and out of the cells occurs at the same rate and results in no net loss or
gain of water by osmosis. This also implies that the potato cylinders in test tubes A and B where
bathed in a sucrose solution that was more dilute (hypotonic) than the intracellular environment of
the potato s cells. The cells of the potato in test tubes A and B gained water by osmosis and
therefore gained mass.
However, the results show that in test tubes D and E with sucrose concentrations of 15% and 20%
respectively, that there was a decrease in mass of the potato cylinders. This was

The, The Gender Knot, By Allan G. Johnson
The biological sex of a person, in most cases, today can still be considered one of the main
identifying characteristics of an individual. In the past the sex of a person was more than an
identifying characteristic, it was who they were. They were either men or women, there was no in
between or changing it. Society today has come a long way in terms of genderidentity and gender
roles, but the concept of patriarchy still has the upper hand when it all boils down. Allan G.
Johnson s, The Gender Knot, provides for a more diverse outlook on the women s expected
roles in life, how they are expected to handle difficult situations in marriage, and how they
demonstrate courage, in Mona Lisa Smile. For years the expected roles of women have been
confined to such things as, housekeeping, cooking, and child care, in the majority of the cultures
around the world. The expected roles of the women in, Mona Lisa Smile, are also confined to
limits such as those. In this movie the women are expected to attend college and make excellent
grades, all while trying to find a husband. They are to graduate from Wellesley College, but going
on to further attend a graduate school is unthinkable. These women all possess the same goal,
which is, to get married and then they think no further than having children. They are expected to
stay at home and take care of the house and the children, while their husband is out working to
provide for the family. They are above all else supposed to respect their

Racial And White-Dominated Society In Ralph Ellison s The...
The Invisible Man was an interesting book to read. It showed the event of African American
racism in 1930 through the eyes of the narrator. Ralph Ellison shows his journey through the
white dominated society. Ellison intended outcome is to us about the African American society;
tell us about the racial, white dominated society; tell us about his experiences in 1930. Ellison
intends to write about the African America society in 1930. He tells us the African Americans
are constantly discriminated. They are blind to the fact that they are being mistreated and avoid
knowing the truth. They try to find their identity in a White dominated society. The Narrator
thinks that he is alive to support and gain recognition of white people. He spends many years
trying to blend into society. Another example is Mr. Bledsoe. He is an African American person
who puts blending into white society above his own people. He declares that he would bring
down every African American before he loses his job. Ellison shows how African Americans try
to join white society and those that have been excepted keep it as an accomplishment and would
never give it away. The second intended outcome was to tell us about racial, white dominated
society. He tells us that they discriminated African Americans and believed that every one of them
was not a human. They also believed that every African American was a tool. The Narrator tells us
that he was thrown into a battle royal for the white people to enjoy. Then after the battle, he was
shown money, but it was a fake and a trick to entertain the white people. A second example is the
statue of the founder. The Narrator sees that the statue shows a symbolism that white people still
did not believe that African Americans were not entirely free. Another example is when the narrator
is in the hospital. While he is at the hospital the doctor tests electrical shock therapy on the narrator
and even tries to castrate him. The white people believe that African Americans are not entirely free
and that they can be used for their own entertainment or for their testing. The third intended
outcome is to tell us about his experience through this time period. He shows us that he experiences

Preparation of Synthetic Banana Oil Essay
Lab 5: Preparation of Synthetic Banana Oil
September 20th, 2012
Purpose:
The main purpose of this experiment was to synthesize banana oil (isopentyl acetate.) Ester are
often prepared by the Fischer esterification method, which involves heating a carboxylic acid with
an alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst.
Theory:
Synthesize isopentyl acetate by combining isopentyl alcohol with acetic acid and sulfuric acid and
then heating the reaction mixture under reflux for an hour. The alcohol is the limiting reactant, so
it should be weighed/ the acids can be measured by volume. The esterification reaction is reversible,
and it has an equilibrium constant of approximately 4.2. A pure component can be obtained from a

The Dream Argument Of Rene Descartes
Final (704935286) The Dream Argument of Rene Descartes is a philosophical skeptical
argument used by Descartes himself to put into doubt the existence of any knowledge he has
gained from his sense. There have been many interpretations of Descartes Dream Argument by
different philosophers, and one notable example is that of Barry Stroud s example. Stroud, in his
Problem of the External World, describes the Dream Argument as an argument where we must
know we are dreaming if we are to know anything about the world around us (Stroud 30). This
reading by Stroud describes the Dream Argument as an altered form of an argument from
ignorance, which would have a general formulation as such: To know any O (ordinary
proposition), I must have prior and independent knowledge of not SH (skeptical hypothesis). I do
not have prior knowledge of not SH. Therefore, I do not know O. For the Dream Argument, the
skeptical hypothesis argues that our current perceptions of the world using our senses are that of a
dream. Stroud argues that Descartes intends on using such a skeptical hypothesis as a pre condition
of being able to know anything with our senses. However, it is the aim of this paper, through
discussing Stroud s interpretation of Descartes Dream Argument to argue that maintaining such a
reading of the Dream Argument ensures that if one agrees with the premise a condition of knowing
anything about the world is that he knows he is not dreaming (21), the radical skeptic would have

Rhetorical Analysis Of On Dumpster Diving
Dumpster Diving: Beneficial Yet Detrimental When people think about dumpsters, a disgusted
image of wretched odors, tornadoes of flies, and spilled sour liquids comes to their minds. In

people don t know that dumpsters has all types of treasures. Because of people s wasteful habits, a
wide variety of items end up in the dumpsters; some are incredibly useful and even in good
condition. In his article, On Dumpster Diving, formerly homeless author Lars Eighner describes
how he became dependent on dumpsterdiving for survival. Eighner includes a definition of
dumpster diving, utilizes irony, and makes a comparison between dumpster divers and can
scroungers to show that even though dumpster diving is beneficial to a homeless man like himself,
society needs to be aware of their wasteful habits. At the beginning of his article, Eighner redefines
dumpster diving to change people s negative views on the term. Traditionally dumpster diving is

The Dark Side Of Chocolate
The Dark Side of Chocolate is a documentary that explores the underlying issues prevalent in the
cocoa trade. For most first world countries chocolate is seen as an accessible treat, however in third
world countries, the production of cocoa creates social issues that must be eliminated. Cocoa trade
is one of the largest industries in West African countries, but the issues that arise from such trade do
more harm than good. The cocoa plantations are trafficking humans to work on their plantations.
Furthermore, most instances suggest that these workers do not receive any compensation for their
work and most importantly some of these slave laborers are children. Thus, the three issues that the
cocoa companies routinely commit in exchange for lower costs are human trafficking, slave labor,
and child labor. These companies are aware of such issues but refuse to actively combat them
because they are better off financially. It can be argued that these issues can be mitigated through
various social, governmental and political policies aimed at combating these problems. The three
main issues will be addressed and the various stakeholders affected by these issues will be analyzed.
Then this paper will look at the possible solutions to these issues, whereby through government,
social or political means. Human trafficking is the first of the issues prevalent in the cocoa trade.

The Horror Genre Of Horror Films Essay
The horror genre has become a popular genre among the movie industry. It has become a popular
genre since it has been evolving throughout the years it has been around, but one of its major
climax points was when the subgenre of zombies came into the mix. The zombie genre became
very popular in the year 1968 when it was first introduced in George Romero s film Night of the
Living Dead. Night of the Living Dead is one of the most prominent zombie films till this date
especially since it has introduced a new monster into the movie industry that nobody would have
expected. Romero s film intertwines with what Noel Carroll is telling us in his article Why Horror?
that it is all about the monsters that appear in the horror film. Noel Carroll s idea of the monster
being the main attraction in all horror films is somewhat true and it showed it when the audience
went to watch the film by George Romero since he introduced the zombies and it caught the
audience curiosity. As soon as he caught the audiences curiosity with the zombies they would just
be focusing on the monster especially trying to figure out how they came to be and how does one
end up destroying them. Andrew Tudor in his article titled the same as Carroll s has a different
approach of explaining horror films, but in some aspect, it relates to Carroll s claim about the
monster that appears in the films. Tudors article is not about the audiences curiosity to the monster,
but about the way the audience sees the

Differential Diagnoses And Physical Examination
Differential Diagnoses and Physical Examination
Differential diagnoses for the case study presented above include scarlet fever, measles, roseola,
and Kawasaki disease (KD) (Glass, 2014). Scarlet fever presents within one to two days of the
onset of symptoms from a group A streptococcal infection (Friedman, Scholes Yoon, 2014). The
rash associated with scarlet fever is diffuse, fine, erythematous, and blanches with pressure
(Friedman et al., 2014). A strawberry appearing tongue is also associated with scarlet fever
(Friedman et al., 2014). Measles is associated with lethargy, high fevers, Koplik spots, and a
maculopapular rash that spreads from the face and trunk to the extremities (Levin, 2014).
Typically, the fevers will resolve within two to three days after the rash appears (Levin, 2014).
Roseola is characterized by drowsiness, high fevers, febrile seizures, irritability, otitis media, mild
diarrhea, and respiratory distress (Glass, 2014).
Kawasaki disease is associated with fevers that persist for at least five days, non exudative
conjunctivitis, lesions or inflammation in the oral cavity, cervical lymphadenopathy, polymorphous
exanthema, and extremity changes (Darst, Collins, Miyamoto, 2014). Diagnostic criteria require
fever and four other associated symptoms for the diagnosis of KD (Darst et al., 2014). Based on the
case scenario, the writer is highly suspicious of KD, which also happens to be the most concerning
diagnosis as it is associated with

Investigating The Mechanism Of Decomposition, Reaction...
Abstract:
Thermal analysis data is used to determine the mechanism of decomposition, reaction energetics,
and gas evolution of a material, specifically calcium silicate, also called limestone. Based on the
basic rules of thermodynamics, a hypothesis can be formed that, as limestone is heated, it
decomposes into calcium oxide and carbon dioxide due to heat transfer and the creation of
impurities. The addition of silicon oxide, or quartz, can also cause limestone to decompose in the
same manner. This was tested using experiments including Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA),
Mass Spectrometry (MS), and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Figures 1 3 confirm this
hypothesis through extensive logging of data. Future work can include data ... Show more content

Unlike pressure, temperature is a simple variable to alter. This is why it is preferred when
analyzing controlled reaction rates, such as heat transfer. An increase in temperature causes certain
materials, commonly salts, to decompose, controlling the free energy that is released. Salts, which
are unstable at high temperatures, are ideal subjects for thermal analysis. For example, when
CaCO3 decomposes into CaO and CO2, the nucleation of CaO causes a decrease in temperature
[that] represents the endothermic heat absorbed by the reaction. The decomposition of a material is
affected by various factors, such as the pressure exerted on the material while it is heated, the
amount of time the material is exposed to heat, and the rate of heat transfer. (Kingery).
On a macroscopic level, as limestone is heated, it will darken in color as it separates into
calcium oxide and carbon dioxide. As it decomposes, calcium oxide will be formed into a solid
and carbon dioxide will be released as a gas. The calcined powder will retain its darker color, but
would otherwise look similar to the initial limestone. Decomposition is a reaction to the impurities
caused by the heating of the material. (Thermogravimetric).
Experimental Methods:
After collecting samples and placing the calcium silicate, limestone, into each machine for the
duration of time needed to collect 230 data points, testing is completed. While in the

Amory Blaine In This Side Of Paradise
This Side of Paradise is the first novel of beloved author F. Scott Fitzgerald. Drawing greatly
from his own life, Fitzgerald tells the story of Amory Blaine. Blaine is born to rich parents who
move from Britain to New England. He is noted as a handsome boy a world of privilege handed
to him as he spends his early years trying to fit in with his new classmates. His high school career
is spent at a boarding school from which he moves to Princeton. It is half way through college that
Amory realizes how empty conforming to school social standards has left him, his grades spiral but
his love for literature grows. With new and larger thoughts filling his head, Amory enlists to fight in
WWI. Upon returning from the war, his heart is stolen truly... Show more content on

There s is an immense pressure on the boys to excel in academics, sports, and clubs to ensure
their acceptance to colleges. His education is quite similar to today s America. It is in this
accademia that Amory first tries to identify himself. Through his first college years, Amory
learns how to work the social structures of the great American school system. After failing a
math class, Amory loses his first definition of himself and turns to philosophy instead of his
graceful conversation. Throughout this section of the book, Fitzgerald makes numerous
references to authors that Amory reads. Many of these books are likely what influenced
Fitzgerald while writing This Side of Paradise. Amory s love life is likely the greatest window
Fitzgerald gives the reader into the social structure of the 20 s. Amory quarts girls from a young
age, attending dances and parlor parties one after the other. He also attends a bobbing party, a
popular get together in the 20 s in which girls would cut their hair short in a large group. We also
see how important financial security was to women when Rosalind leaves Amory. Although she is
truly in love with him, her fear of an unsure feature over takes her. Because women still weren t
commonly holding jobs, they depended on their husbands

Wallace and Gromit eat your heart out there s a new chick in town! Chicken Run, directed by
Peter Lord and Nick Park is a sensational clay animation. A new piece of cinematic excellence to

Enough about how good the film is; what is it about?

This gives a valiant quality to the film and makes the audience feel good, too! The moment the
titles have finished, the music descends from a triumphant melody into eerie gloomy drone.
Combined with the music we are shown a crisp low angle shot of a full moon surrounded by
darkness. Gradually the camera zooms in from the sky and we see an insert shot of the barbed wire
fence giving us an impression of imprisonment. This is followed by an establishing shot of Mr.
Tweedy and his dog. In his hand he is holding a torch and patrolling the area, as they walk
towards us we can hear the pitter patter of the dog s feet. Followed by, an extreme close up of an
ancient rusted padlock (obviously keeping the fence locked). We are further focused on this as
Mr. Tweedy shines his torch onto the padlock and checks it is securely locked, as he drops the
lock we hear the clank noise it makes as it hits the fence. The focus on the lock reinforces the theme
of imprisonment given previously from the barbed wire. It is also an important element to the film
as the audience has to believe that it is evil to keep chickens locked up. The music has maintained
its ominous characteristics. All these presentational techniques have been used to create the idea
that something important is imprisoned inside the fence; thus

Romeo And Juliet Film Review
Don t Hang Up Philosophy Philosophy Can Make A Movie
Film: Romeo and Juliet
Director: Baz Luhrmann
Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio amp; Claire Danes
Plot: Two lovers of rival, disputing families take their lives.
Rating:
Reviewer: Claire Ginn
Welcome to VeronaBeach, a sexy, violent other world, neither future nor past, ruled by two rival
families, the Montagues and the Capulets...
So begins Baz Luhrmann s production of Shakespeare s beloved play, quot;Romeo and Juliet, quot;
from the famous opening line of quot; Two Households both alike in dignity.. quot; to the tragic
end, the viewer is whisked away into the depths of heightened realism in the world of Verona Beach.

Lots of music, fast cuts, fantastic cinematography and superb sets and costumes make it the lively
tale it was meant to be. These features also make the film somewhat cartoon like with a lot of
heightened realism. Don t expect to see British people prancing around in tights when you rent this
one. Luhrmann creates a world where gun toting youths sport Hawaiian shirts and beachfront
brawls are an everyday event.
Purists may hesitate, but the film uses its modern setting to its full potential and should be
required viewing for any director who looks to put a modern spin on the 400 year old play.
Capulet and Montague become warring Mafia leaders, the Prince of Verona is a police chief
trying to overcome the violence, and television anchors represent Shakespeare s traditional chorus.
Other, more subtle narrative devices work equally as well. No modern audience could mistake the
significance of the quot;attempted delivery quot; post it that falls off the door, never to be found.
This isn t just an update; director Baz Luhrmann has created a savvy exploitation of the film
medium that assists the audience with Shakespeare s dated language.
Giving the classic play this modern twist makes for a new understanding of the text and brings
the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets to a whole new, dramatic level. Shakespeare
may be rolling around in his grave after seeing this film, but English classes all over the world can
breathe a little easier when it comes time to take

It is possible to notice differences in the climate behavior around the word. The elderly people from

proove that the average of the patterns of precipitation, temperature, seassons, humudity, and wind

several impacts in the earth. The prevision is that it will keep changing. The climate changing is

There is no proof of how much countries need to reduce the production of Greenhouse gases, but
since years ago that scientists have been studying attempts to solve te Global Warming and avoid
or stop the climate changing. With the development of the technology, many countries start slowly
replacing the old fashioned cars for electric cars to reduce the pollution, which is an example of
use of alternative sources of energy. Use renewable energy such as wind, sun, hydro and
geothermal energy, and reduce the coalburning from the industries, are plausible solutions too. In

Carbon Fiber As A Chemical Compound
Carbon fibre is a chemical compound that is composed of a long chain of carbon atoms bonded to
each other using covalent bonds. The covalent bonds are formed under extreme conditions of heat
and pressure and may combine a carbon compound with a piece of plastic or a polymer. The carbon
occurs in very thin strands that have a diameter smaller than that of a human hair though it is
credited to having the five times the tensile strengthof steel and two times its stiffness although it
the carbon compound has only two thirds the weight of steel. In modern times, carbon fibre is
commercially synthesised in industries as it has a wide variety of applications in tasks requiring
strength while at the same time minimising weight such as in aeroplane body panels.
Fibre glass, on the other hand, is made up of melted glass that is blown, elongated or extruded to
for a string like material. Fibreglass has an advantage over carbon in that the synthetic manufacture
of fibreglass is easier as it does not require high temperatures to be produced. The material,
however, has nearly similar physical properties to carbon regarding strength, weight and modulus of
elasticity.
In this laboratory report, we will investigate the tensile properties of the above two materials.
Introduction
The aim of the lab session was to study the properties of composite materials by testing the
materials in tension. The test composite materials to be tested comprised of carbon and fibreglass

Wrongful Convictions And Its Effect On Society
Introduction Many of us are familiar with historical films such as The Shawshank Redemption , but
the reality is that wrongful convictions have occurred throughout history and although less
frequently, still occur today. A wrongful conviction can greatly impact an individual s life and may
continue to be an issue even after exoneration. Many people are under the impression that
individuals who are wrongfully convicted and later exonerated have won the battle over the justice
system, however this is rarely the case. Exonerees experience great amounts of hardship once
released back into society. There are flaws in the justice system, which make it extremely difficult
for exonerees to experience true freedom. Wrongful convictions occur not only in the United States,
but also across the entire globe. It is a serious injustice when an innocent person is forced to
experience life as a convicted felon. Causes of Wrongful Convictions Although numerous cases of
wrongful convictions have been documented in the literature and in the media, criminologists have
yet to devise a methodology for estimating the extent of such errors in the criminal justice system.
(Poveda, 2001) Since DNA testing has been utilized in the justice system, wrongful convictions
have become less frequent and exoneration rates have increased. There are many factors involved
when consider the causes of wrongful convictions. Eyewitness misidentification is a leading cause
for wrongful convictions. (Innocence

John Locke s Theory Of Perception And Knowledge
In his work A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge (1710), George Berkeley
is presenting a theory of perception and knowledge which is both a counter to and development of
John Locke s own theory as set out in An Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1689). Both
Locke and Berkeley are empiricists, that is to say that they believe that all important truths and
knowledge can be found out through attention to the senses and as such, having a valid theory of
perceptionis crucial to them and their work. However, their theories are very different. Locke
devised a causal theory of perception, that sensedata that we receive from the outside world then
causes us to have ideas of objects and it is these ideas that we perceive. Berkeley, on the other
hand, has a theory called subjective idealism which will be discussed here.
In any piece of epistemological work it is vital that we know what is meant by knowledge . At
the start of his work, Berkeley explains knowledge by saying that it is all ideas which are formed
through: the input of sense data; a consideration of one s own thoughts, feelings and mental
processes; or using one s memory and/or imagination to bring together, split apart or change in
some way that which has already been perceived. When certain ideas are experienced together on
multiple occasions these ideas are then brought together to form a whole which is then known as a
certain kind of thing.
Berkeley then goes on to say that there must also be

cause an allergic immune response (beryllium sensitization), acute beryllium disease (similar to
acute pneumonitis) and chronic beryllium disease (a granulomatous lung disease with symptoms
similar to sarcoidosis) (Patient plus). Historically, black miners have been evident to show higher

Eliminating silicosis is a priority of the International Labour Organization and the World Health
Organization (Environmental health). As miners continue to age and work for longer periods,
the burden of Pneumoconiosis will continue to increase, prevalence is particularly high in
emerging countries. The crude proportion of silicosis for white miners was six times that of
black miners in 1975. By 2007, it was 1.5 times higher for black miners. The proportion of
miners with Pneumoconiosis increased from 0.03 to 0.32 for black miners and from 0.18 to
0.22 for white miners. Pneumoconiosis is also a prescribed industrial disease. Financial
compensation may be available where an individual is able to show they worked in a job for
which their disease is prescribed and that their illness is likely due to the occupational exposure
in modern times (Patient plus). The most commonly occurring variant, apart from asbestosis, is
coal worker s pneumoconiosis (CWP), arising from the inhalation of coal dust. There is
generally a long time lag between exposure and onset of the disease10 years in the case of coal
dust and 15 60 years with asbestos hence, newest cases or deaths from pneumoconiosis reflect
the working conditions of the past (Patient plus). The increase can be explained by increasing
age and employment duration for white miners. For black miners, it can be only partly
explained by these two factors (Environmental Health). Coal miner s as well as many other
minors, were defined as those who had ever been employed in the mining industry. The study
population comprised all miners who had been employed for 1 year and who died from an
external cause of death. External causes of death included those coded in the International

The rejection can cause death after transplanting the heart as the patient s body immune system

The cardiac allograft vasulopathy can result in the walls of the coronary arteries in the donated

Daily medicine can cause the immune system to stop from attacking the donated heart and other

The Help Movie Analysis
The Help, a film centered around the theme of discrimination based on the color of one s skin, is
set in Jackson, Mississippi during the early 1960s. The story took place before the Civil Rights
Movement and Act of 1964 after which all citizens of the United States were guaranteed the
same provisions and racial segregation was prohibited. We see innumerous instances of the
white ladies viewing their black domestic maids as inferior PEOPLE. This shows us how the
skin color of an individual in Southern society actually determined which class he or she was 3
/ 3 born into and the socioeconomic conditions he had to endure during his lifetime. Each and
every colored character we come across in the course of the plot fits into the system as a
member of the working class while most white women we know are the employers of these
colored helps as part of high society. In essence, this movie is about a white woman who told the
story of black women. Skeeter interviewed different domestic maids like Aibileen and Minny, who
spent their lives looking after others white children while their own were back at home. She
documented their suffering and experiences and published them in a book known as The Help
within the movie. These two distinct sections of society, whites and colored were actually separate

white women from the upper classes for a nominal wage did so initially but soon, the superiority

taken. If it is snorted effects include: loss of sense of smell, nosebleeds, frequent runny nose,
and problems with swallowing. Ingesting orally leads to severe bowel decay from reduced

other bloodborne diseases. However, those who use non needle forms of cocaine are still at risk

severe paranoia which can lead to the loss of touch with reality and cause auditory hallucinations.
Along with all the previously mentioned effects, if someone becomes dependent on cocaine,

Dissociative Disorders And The Most Controversial Disorders
Mai Nguyen
PSYC 1
Dec. 11, 2015
Dissociative Disorders
Dissociative disorders are one of the most controversial disorders that exist. It is often argued that
the disorder does not actually exist and that people are over diagnosed. Dissociative disorders is a
type of psychological disorder that involve a sudden loss of memory of change in identity due to
the dissociation (separation) of the individual s conscious awareness from previous memories
and thoughts. A common example of a dissociation is when an individual daydreams and
becomes unaware of the passage of time. However, this is just a very mild case of dissociation
and is normal to experience. The NAMI (National Alliance on Medical Health) declares that
approximately half of Americans have experienced a dissociative episode in their life but only two
percent of those cases are severe enough to meet the full criteria of chronic episodes. This disorder
is more often found in women rather than men.
There are three main types of dissociative disorders along with a fourth type that is less often
categorized. The types of dissociative disorders are dissociative amnesia, dissociative fugue,
dissociative identity disorder (DID), and depersonalization or derealization. Dissociative amnesia is
characterized by extreme memory loss that is caused by extensive psychological stress. Individuals
with dissociative amnesia can easily remember everyday tasks and procedural memories but they
are unable to remember their own identity and

  • 3. Neil Postman The End Of Education Summary Introduction: Education in today s day in age has evolved to become an intricate system of developing individual knowledge on social values and academic knowledge in the context of a technologically advanced global society. Neil Postman in his book, The End of Education, argues that the educational crisis is complex and that the technical problem of building academic skills is just a scratch in the surface. Postman believed that schools focused more on teaching economic utility, consumerism, multiculturalism and technology. Postman (1995) also claims that schools in their methods and practices do not necessarily help students in preparing for economic life and that there was no evidence that a quality schooling experience could be associated with positive economic productivity (p.28). Moreover, Postman claims that the value of group cohesion and connectivity with peers is lost with the individualization of computer learning (1995, p.45). Postman believed that learning to accept the world with all its cultural rules, requirements, constraints, and even prejudices; is one of the two things schools must be teaching. The second being, students developing skills to be critical thinkers, which in turn makes them rational, independent minded and problem solving adults (1995, p.60). Postman s views were that education with technology is teaching about how technology assists and restricts students in doing positive or negative things, how education was dealt with in the ... • 5. Toothpaste Modern Toothpaste Toothpaste is a paste or gel dentifrice used to clean and maintain the aesthetics and health of teeth. Toothpaste use can promote good oral hygiene: it can aid in the removal of dental plaque and food from the teeth, it can aid in the elimination and/or masking of halitosis, and it can deliver active ingredients such as fluoride or xylitol to prevent tooth and gum disease (gingivitis). In most or all developed countries, usage after each meal is encouraged. Most toothpastecontains chemicals which are toxic when ingested, and is not intended to be swallowed. Sodium fluoride (NaF) is the most common form; some brands use sodium monofluorophosphate (Na2PO3F). Much of the toothpaste sold in the United States has 1000 to 1100 parts per million fluoride ion from one of these active ingredients, in the UK the fluoride content is often higher, a NaF of 0.32% w/w (1,450 ppm fluoride) is not uncommon. This consistency leads some to conclude that cheap toothpaste is just as good as expensive toothpaste. When the magazine Consumer Reports rated toothpastes in 1998, 30 of the 38 were judged excellent. Application of fluoride also prevents moisture build up in some surfaces.[citation needed] Other ingredients are less commonly used, including Hydroxyapatite nanocrystals and calcium phosphate for remineralization,[6] and strontium chloride or potassium nitrate to reduce sensitivity. [edit] Other ingredients In addition to fluoride, the other fundamental ingredient in most toothpastes is an abrasive.[citation needed] Studies have shown that abrasives in toothpaste reduce the time needed to remove plaque from the teeth by approximately 50%. Abrasives, like the dental polishing agents used in dentist s offices, also cause a small amount of enamel erosion which is termed polishing action. Some brands contain powdered white mica which acts as a mild abrasive, and also adds a cosmetically pleasing glittery shimmer to the paste. Many may contain frustules of dead ... • 6. The Pros And Cons Of Belgian Federalism Dr. Wilfried Swenden, a professor at Edinborough University in his research paper called Belgian Federalism: Basic Institutional Features and Potential as a Model for the European Union , argues that there are positive as well as negative aspects as Belgium as a federal state. The good things about it is that it managed to lower the amount of tension between the different language speaking groups. He supports it by stating that the amount of demonstrations has gone down since federalization of the country and that that can be linked to the success of the government. One of the critiques that is often raised that it is very costly. Certainly, the process itself costs money, however, it could lower the expenses by stopping some of the costly proto federal practices aimed at concealing disputes between the two Communitiesin a unitary context (Swenden, 2003). He also argues that the state of public finance is better nowadays than in was before the reforms. One of his strongest arguments is that people have actually started identifying more with Belgiumthan before when they allowed to identify with their region too. Swenden calls it the Moreno question the share of citizens who have been willing to shift their identity to the Belgian end of the continuum has increased, rather than decreased over time (Swenden, 2003). However, there are some disadvantages. Like that Belgium while having three regions and communities is actually bipolar in character. The German speaking ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Knowledge Defined as Justified True Belief In Plato s Theaetetus, the dialog between Socrates and his student, Theaetetus, sets up the argument that knowledge is true belief that is adequately justified. Although there are many examples that prove Plato s suggestion, people such as Edmund Gettier have questioned and disproved the notion of knowledge as justified true belief. In response to Gettier s findings, many have tried to modify or find an alternative to the Justified True Belief model in search for the true definition of knowledge. In this paper, I will outline and discuss Plato s Justified True Belief argument, outline and discuss Gettier s response to Plato s argument, and lastly, present and analyze four solutions to the Gettier problems. 1. Plato s Justified True Belief In Plato s Theaetetus, Socrates starts his discussion by asking Theaetetus to define the word knowledge. In response to Socrates question, Theaetetus responds by saying, geometry...cobblery, and other craftsmen s arts...are nothing else but knowledge (Plato, 2). Though true, Plato is not satisfied with Theaetetus definition of knowledge because it fails to address the core meaning of the word. Plato is interested in understanding the definition of knowledge through conceptual analysis understanding the minimum requirements for one to have knowledge, and avoiding circularity in definitions. In order to define knowledge through conceptual analysis, Socrates and Plato outline the argument as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. The Changing Choice In The Kite Runner By Khaled Hosseini Have you ever made a choice that has changed your life forever whether it was in a good or bad way? Well one choice you make can change someone s life forever whether it s in a good way or bad way. Here in America we mostly see one choice change our lives for the better like being in a relationship, taking a job oppurtunity, going to college to get a career, all of these things change our lives for the better. • 11. One Of The Most Important Elements In Dracula Jeffrey Hinkle Professor Ramirez English 303B 13 July 2016 Quiz 2 on Dracula One of the most important elements in Dracula is imagery, and I believe Bram Stroker uses sleeping to show weakness in his characters and to develop a sense of danger. Uniquely, in the Victorian age, people believed a person s mind was only healthy when they were asleep, and their bodies were safer when awake. Of course, this goes hand in hand with the story so far in Dracula, because the majority of the danger in Dracula takes place at nighttime when people are sleeping. Furthermore, I believe this may be why Stroker has placed such a big emphasis on sleeping throughout Dracula; in fact, Stroker demonstrates how sleeping puts a person in their most vulnerable state. ... Of course, this gives me an unnerving feeling and a curious thought as to what else is in the castle, but I know it would be wise for Harker to heed Dracula s words. In the end, Harker did not listen to Dracula s words and he found himself in grave danger when he awoke to three blood thirsty women standing in the same room he fell asleep in. However, Dracula stepped in and saved Harker, but I found out exactly how weak a person is when they are asleep in an unsecured ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If a chemical change is taking place we will be breaking bonds and forming new bonds and therefore creating a new substance. In a Physical change we will have the same substance but simply in a new form. (Dickinson et al. 197). In order to collect evidence to prove a chemical change is occurring we need a change in the indicators. The more active a chemical is the more likely it will have a chemical reaction with another chemical. (Dickinson et al. 180) The higher the element is on the Activity Series the more reactive it is. (Dickinson et al. 192) A reactive element will replace an element that is underneath it in the activity series. (Dickinson et al. 192) In this lab we will examine chemical reactions with the activity series, indicators and the type of chemical reaction it is. The purpose of this lab is to study chemical change and analyze why and how chemical reactions are created. In this lab we are going to combine certain chemicals with each other to create a chemical change and we will observe and record any changes. Nursing Constraints Constraints are anything that limit or discourage certain movements at the same time they permit or encourage other movements or shape the movement(s). 1 In light of that, when assessing the constraints that may exist for this female patient there are three constraints that she will encounter: individual constraints, environmental constraints, and task constraints. First, the individual constraints exist within the patient herself (her own body). These constraints are related to her structure (anatomical physiology, i.e. her height, weight, muscle mass, body size, etc.) and her function (her behavior, attention, motivation). These constraints are all dependent on the patient herself and how she is able to operate. In this case the patient has some stability and weakness issues of the ankle joint of the involved limb. This will present a problem because she feels her ankle giving way when she plays sports. Osmosis in Potato Tubers Osmosis in Potato Tubers Andrew Dickson Background When a plant cell is bathed in a solution of the same concentration (isotonic) as its intracellular environment, its mass and volume remain the same. This is because water enters and leaves the cells at the same rate. There is no net loss or gain of water by osmosis. Samples of cells can be placed in a range of solutions of different concentration. The cells will gain water by osmosis when placed in solutions which are more dilute (hypotonic) than the intracellular environment. They will therefore gain mass. The cells will lose water in those solutions that are more concentrated (hypertonic) than the intracellular environment and so lose mass. The concentration of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some of the potatoes expanded and increased in mass whilst others shrunk and decreased in mass. This was caused by the diffusion of water from the cells to the sucrose solution or vice versa through the process of osmosis. During osmosis water will diffuse across a semi permeable membrane from a region of low solute concentration to a region of high solute concentration. The potato cylinders in both test tubes A and B with sucrose concentrations of 0% and 5% respectively, had a noticeable increase in mass, whereas the potato in test tube C even though having an increase in mass, was only marginal. This suggests that the sucrose concentration in test tube C, which was 10%, is almost the same concentration (isotonic) as the potato s cells intracellular environment because the mass remains relatively the same. This is because the movement of water into and out of the cells occurs at the same rate and results in no net loss or gain of water by osmosis. This also implies that the potato cylinders in test tubes A and B where bathed in a sucrose solution that was more dilute (hypotonic) than the intracellular environment of the potato s cells. The cells of the potato in test tubes A and B gained water by osmosis and therefore gained mass. Ellison intended outcome is to us about the African American society; tell us about the racial, white dominated society; tell us about his experiences in 1930. Ellison intends to write about the African America society in 1930. He tells us the African Americans are constantly discriminated. They are blind to the fact that they are being mistreated and avoid knowing the truth. They try to find their identity in a White dominated society. The Narrator thinks that he is alive to support and gain recognition of white people. He spends many years trying to blend into society. Another example is Mr. Bledsoe. He is an African American person who puts blending into white society above his own people. He declares that he would bring down every African American before he loses his job. Ellison shows how African Americans try to join white society and those that have been excepted keep it as an accomplishment and would never give it away. The second intended outcome was to tell us about racial, white dominated society. He tells us that they discriminated African Americans and believed that every one of them was not a human. They also believed that every African American was a tool. The Narrator tells us that he was thrown into a battle royal for the white people to enjoy. Then after the battle, he was shown money, but it was a fake and a trick to entertain the white people. A second example is the statue of the founder. The Narrator sees that the statue shows a symbolism that white people still did not believe that African Americans were not entirely free. Another example is when the narrator is in the hospital. While he is at the hospital the doctor tests electrical shock therapy on the narrator and even tries to castrate him. The white people believe that African Americans are not entirely free and that they can be used for their own entertainment or for their testing. The third intended outcome is to tell us about his experience through this time period. He shows us that he experiences ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Preparation of Synthetic Banana Oil Essay Lab 5: Preparation of Synthetic Banana Oil September 20th, 2012 Purpose: The main purpose of this experiment was to synthesize banana oil (isopentyl acetate.) Ester are often prepared by the Fischer esterification method, which involves heating a carboxylic acid with an alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst. Theory: Synthesize isopentyl acetate by combining isopentyl alcohol with acetic acid and sulfuric acid and then heating the reaction mixture under reflux for an hour. The alcohol is the limiting reactant, so it should be weighed/ the acids can be measured by volume. The esterification reaction is reversible, and it has an equilibrium constant of approximately 4.2. • 31. The Dream Argument Of Rene Descartes Final (704935286) The Dream Argument of Rene Descartes is a philosophical skeptical argument used by Descartes himself to put into doubt the existence of any knowledge he has gained from his sense. There have been many interpretations of Descartes Dream Argument by different philosophers, and one notable example is that of Barry Stroud s example. Stroud, in his Problem of the External World, describes the Dream Argument as an argument where we must know we are dreaming if we are to know anything about the world around us (Stroud 30). This reading by Stroud describes the Dream Argument as an altered form of an argument from ignorance, which would have a general formulation as such: To know any O (ordinary proposition), I must have prior and independent knowledge of not SH (skeptical hypothesis). I do not have prior knowledge of not SH. Therefore, I do not know O. For the Dream Argument, the skeptical hypothesis argues that our current perceptions of the world using our senses are that of a dream. Stroud argues that Descartes intends on using such a skeptical hypothesis as a pre condition of being able to know anything with our senses. However, it is the aim of this paper, through discussing Stroud s interpretation of Descartes Dream Argument to argue that maintaining such a reading of the Dream Argument ensures that if one agrees with the premise a condition of knowing anything about the world is that he knows he is not dreaming (21), the radical skeptic would have ... • 33. The Dark Side Of Chocolate The Dark Side of Chocolate is a documentary that explores the underlying issues prevalent in the cocoa trade. For most first world countries chocolate is seen as an accessible treat, however in third world countries, the production of cocoa creates social issues that must be eliminated. Cocoa trade is one of the largest industries in West African countries, but the issues that arise from such trade do more harm than good. The cocoa plantations are trafficking humans to work on their plantations. Furthermore, most instances suggest that these workers do not receive any compensation for their work and most importantly some of these slave laborers are children. Thus, the three issues that the cocoa companies routinely commit in exchange for lower costs are human trafficking, slave labor, and child labor. These companies are aware of such issues but refuse to actively combat them because they are better off financially. It can be argued that these issues can be mitigated through various social, governmental and political policies aimed at combating these problems. The three main issues will be addressed and the various stakeholders affected by these issues will be analyzed. Then this paper will look at the possible solutions to these issues, whereby through government, social or political means. Human trafficking is the first of the issues prevalent in the cocoa trade. It has become a popular genre since it has been evolving throughout the years it has been around, but one of its major climax points was when the subgenre of zombies came into the mix. The zombie genre became very popular in the year 1968 when it was first introduced in George Romero s film Night of the Living Dead. Night of the Living Dead is one of the most prominent zombie films till this date especially since it has introduced a new monster into the movie industry that nobody would have expected. Romero s film intertwines with what Noel Carroll is telling us in his article Why Horror? that it is all about the monsters that appear in the horror film. Noel Carroll s idea of the monster being the main attraction in all horror films is somewhat true and it showed it when the audience went to watch the film by George Romero since he introduced the zombies and it caught the audience curiosity. As soon as he caught the audiences curiosity with the zombies they would just be focusing on the monster especially trying to figure out how they came to be and how does one end up destroying them. Andrew Tudor in his article titled the same as Carroll s has a different approach of explaining horror films, but in some aspect, it relates to Carroll s claim about the monster that appears in the films. Differential Diagnoses And Physical Examination Differential Diagnoses and Physical Examination Differential diagnoses for the case study presented above include scarlet fever, measles, roseola, and Kawasaki disease (KD) (Glass, 2014). Scarlet fever presents within one to two days of the onset of symptoms from a group A streptococcal infection (Friedman, Scholes Yoon, 2014). The rash associated with scarlet fever is diffuse, fine, erythematous, and blanches with pressure (Friedman et al., 2014). A strawberry appearing tongue is also associated with scarlet fever (Friedman et al., 2014). Measles is associated with lethargy, high fevers, Koplik spots, and a maculopapular rash that spreads from the face and trunk to the extremities (Levin, 2014). Typically, the fevers will resolve within two to three days after the rash appears (Levin, 2014). Roseola is characterized by drowsiness, high fevers, febrile seizures, irritability, otitis media, mild diarrhea, and respiratory distress (Glass, 2014). Kawasaki disease is associated with fevers that persist for at least five days, non exudative conjunctivitis, lesions or inflammation in the oral cavity, cervical lymphadenopathy, polymorphous exanthema, and extremity changes (Darst, Collins, Miyamoto, 2014). Diagnostic criteria require fever and four other associated symptoms for the diagnosis of KD (Darst et al., 2014). • 37. Investigating The Mechanism Of Decomposition, Reaction... Abstract: Thermal analysis data is used to determine the mechanism of decomposition, reaction energetics, and gas evolution of a material, specifically calcium silicate, also called limestone. Based on the basic rules of thermodynamics, a hypothesis can be formed that, as limestone is heated, it decomposes into calcium oxide and carbon dioxide due to heat transfer and the creation of impurities. The addition of silicon oxide, or quartz, can also cause limestone to decompose in the same manner. This was tested using experiments including Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Mass Spectrometry (MS), and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Figures 1 3 confirm this hypothesis through extensive logging of data. Future work can include data ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unlike pressure, temperature is a simple variable to alter. This is why it is preferred when analyzing controlled reaction rates, such as heat transfer. An increase in temperature causes certain materials, commonly salts, to decompose, controlling the free energy that is released. Salts, which are unstable at high temperatures, are ideal subjects for thermal analysis. For example, when CaCO3 decomposes into CaO and CO2, the nucleation of CaO causes a decrease in temperature [that] represents the endothermic heat absorbed by the reaction. The decomposition of a material is affected by various factors, such as the pressure exerted on the material while it is heated, the amount of time the material is exposed to heat, and the rate of heat transfer. (Kingery). On a macroscopic level, as limestone is heated, it will darken in color as it separates into calcium oxide and carbon dioxide. As it decomposes, calcium oxide will be formed into a solid and carbon dioxide will be released as a gas. The calcined powder will retain its darker color, but would otherwise look similar to the initial limestone. Decomposition is a reaction to the impurities caused by the heating of the material. (Thermogravimetric). Experimental Methods: After collecting samples and placing the calcium silicate, limestone, into each machine for the duration of time needed to collect 230 data points, testing is completed. The covalent bonds are formed under extreme conditions of heat and pressure and may combine a carbon compound with a piece of plastic or a polymer. The carbon occurs in very thin strands that have a diameter smaller than that of a human hair though it is credited to having the five times the tensile strengthof steel and two times its stiffness although it the carbon compound has only two thirds the weight of steel. A wrongful conviction can greatly impact an individual s life and may continue to be an issue even after exoneration. Many people are under the impression that individuals who are wrongfully convicted and later exonerated have won the battle over the justice system, however this is rarely the case. Exonerees experience great amounts of hardship once released back into society. There are flaws in the justice system, which make it extremely difficult for exonerees to experience true freedom. Wrongful convictions occur not only in the United States, but also across the entire globe. It is a serious injustice when an innocent person is forced to experience life as a convicted felon. Causes of Wrongful Convictions Although numerous cases of wrongful convictions have been documented in the literature and in the media, criminologists have yet to devise a methodology for estimating the extent of such errors in the criminal justice system. (Poveda, 2001) Since DNA testing has been utilized in the justice system, wrongful convictions have become less frequent and exoneration rates have increased. John Locke s Theory Of Perception And Knowledge In his work A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge (1710), George Berkeley is presenting a theory of perception and knowledge which is both a counter to and development of John Locke s own theory as set out in An Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1689). Both Locke and Berkeley are empiricists, that is to say that they believe that all important truths and knowledge can be found out through attention to the senses and as such, having a valid theory of perceptionis crucial to them and their work. However, their theories are very different. Locke devised a causal theory of perception, that sensedata that we receive from the outside world then causes us to have ideas of objects and it is these ideas that we perceive. Berkeley, on the other hand, has a theory called subjective idealism which will be discussed here. In any piece of epistemological work it is vital that we know what is meant by knowledge . At the start of his work, Berkeley explains knowledge by saying that it is all ideas which are formed through: the input of sense data; a consideration of one s own thoughts, feelings and mental processes; or using one s memory and/or imagination to bring together, split apart or change in some way that which has already been perceived. When certain ideas are experienced together on multiple occasions these ideas are then brought together to form a whole which is then known as a certain kind of thing. The increase can be explained by increasing age and employment duration for white miners. For black miners, it can be only partly explained by these two factors (Environmental Health). Coal miner s as well as many other minors, were defined as those who had ever been employed in the mining industry. The study population comprised all miners who had been employed for 1 year and who died from an external cause of death. External causes of death included those coded in the International Classification of Diseases (WHO 1992) as injuries (e.g., as a result of mine or traffic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 51. The Help Movie Analysis The Help, a film centered around the theme of discrimination based on the color of one s skin, is set in Jackson, Mississippi during the early 1960s. The story took place before the Civil Rights Movement and Act of 1964 after which all citizens of the United States were guaranteed the same provisions and racial segregation was prohibited. We see innumerous instances of the white ladies viewing their black domestic maids as inferior PEOPLE. This shows us how the skin color of an individual in Southern society actually determined which class he or she was 3 / 3 born into and the socioeconomic conditions he had to endure during his lifetime. Each and every colored character we come across in the course of the plot fits into the system as a member of the working class while most white women we know are the employers of these colored helps as part of high society. In essence, this movie is about a white woman who told the story of black women. Skeeter interviewed different domestic maids like Aibileen and Minny, who spent their lives looking after others white children while their own were back at home. She documented their suffering and experiences and published them in a book known as The Help within the movie. These two distinct sections of society, whites and colored were actually separate classes.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, everything comes at a price, the short term health effects are: constricted blood vessels, dilated pupils, nausea, raised temperature and blood pressure, faster heartbeat, tremors and muscle twitches, and restlessness. The long term effects of cocaine depend on how it is taken. If it is snorted effects include: loss of sense of smell, nosebleeds, frequent runny nose, and problems with swallowing. Ingesting orally leads to severe bowel decay from reduced blood flow. If it is injected, the effects include higher risk of contracting HIV, hepatitis C, and other bloodborne diseases. • 53. Dissociative Disorders And The Most Controversial Disorders Mai Nguyen PSYC 1 Dec. 11, 2015 Dissociative Disorders Dissociative disorders are one of the most controversial disorders that exist. It is often argued that the disorder does not actually exist and that people are over diagnosed. Dissociative disorders is a type of psychological disorder that involve a sudden loss of memory of change in identity due to the dissociation (separation) of the individual s conscious awareness from previous memories and thoughts. A common example of a dissociation is when an individual daydreams and becomes unaware of the passage of time. However, this is just a very mild case of dissociation and is normal to experience. The NAMI (National Alliance on Medical Health) declares that approximately half of Americans have experienced a dissociative episode in their life but only two percent of those cases are severe enough to meet the full criteria of chronic episodes. This disorder is more often found in women rather than men. There are three main types of dissociative disorders along with a fourth type that is less often categorized. The types of dissociative disorders are dissociative amnesia, dissociative fugue, dissociative identity disorder (DID), and depersonalization or derealization. Dissociative amnesia is characterized by extreme memory loss that is caused by extensive psychological stress. Individuals with dissociative amnesia can easily remember everyday tasks and procedural memories but they are unable to remember their own identity and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
