WELCOME
Let’S SET THE SCENE FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS
SO WHAT ARE YOU IN FOR IN THE NEXT FOUR DAYS?
Thank you - we know just how big a deal this is.
Not a normal kind of retreat.
What do we need from you?
What can you expect from us?
So it’s a speaking retreat - you need to speak (a couple of ways we will do this).
Let’s run through the agenda.
Random discussion topics - when we need a break.
Aha moments/Things to do - boards.
A few other bonuses - videos, books and speaker buddies.
Food, breaks, stuff.
Tell us your story.
Bree tell us your story.
Andrew tell us your story.
LET’S GET STARTED
Why do we present - what’s our big why?
The upside of getting it right - and it’s a big upside.
What is a wold class communicator?
What does it take to be successful as a professional speaker?
WHERE ARE THE MOST COMMON PRESENTING MISTAKES?
1. They are totally disorganised
2. They haven’t done their homework on the
audience
3. Their presentation lacks a clear purpose
4. They have no real structure
5. They have PPT and they shouldn’t
6. They are overly reliant on technology
7. They are saying things we’ve all heard
before
8. They are boring and lack passion
9. They don’t create any rapport
10. They just press play
WHERE ARE THE MOST COMMON PRESENTING MISTAKES?
11. They miss the mark with their audience
12. They make simple ideas complicated
13. They have bad body language
14. They don’t make any eye contact
15. They are hard to understand
16. They don’t use any humour
17. They talk too fast and don’t use silence
18. They don’t use their voice effectively
19. They stand and read their presentation
20. They are dickheads.
MODULE 1 - WE NEED THE RIGHT FRAMEWORK
WE NEED A GREAT FRAMEWORK FOR DEVELOPING OUR PRESENTATIONS…
We’ve spoken about where people go wrong as speakers, let’s not do any of that stuff.
My Professional Speaker Framework - the background.
How you can use this framework?
Once you master this, the most important speaker rule of all comes into play.
THINGS GO WRONG - ALL THE TIME.
THE MORE RESEARCH YOU DO THE FEWER
THINGS THAT SEEM TO GO WRONG.
RESEARCH YOUR AUDIENCE.
RESEARCH YOUR VENUE.
RESEARCH WHaT IS
GOING ON LOCALLY.
WHAT DID ALL OF THAT RESEARCH TELL YOU?
WE NEED TO BE CLEAR ON HAVING
THE RIGHT MOOD.
PEOPLE FORGET THE DETAILS
BUT THEY REMEMBER
YOUR EMOTION.
GIVE YOUR AUDIENCE A
SIGNIFICANT REASON TO

LISTEN TO YOU.
SOLVE PROBLEMS. THE BIGGER THE PROBLEMS
THE MORE COMPELLING YOU WILL BE.
WE NEED SOME PASSION.
AND A VERY BIG WORD YOU
WILL HEaR US SAY A LOT -
AUTHENTICITY
WHY DO WE NEED TO STRUCTURE
OUR PRESENTATIONS?
THE OPENING IS REALLY IMPORTANT

MODULE 2 - DEVELOPING YOUR SIGNATURE KEYNOTE PRESENTATIONWORKSHOP - “YOUR STORY MATTERS”
WORKSHOP - “YOUR STORY MATTERS”
IF YOU COME TO A SPEAKING SKILL RETREAT YOU NEED TO SPEAK.
We are all familiar with TED and TEDx talk right?
Awesome to learn from.
You are going to develop you own 15 minute presentation and deliver it on Sunday
morning.
We are going to film it.
So you need to develop it.
Where do we start? Let’s review what we just covered?
OK, so we can apply that.
Let’s review a 15 minute TEDx talk - and see if we can make sense of how it is put
together.
Then you get to start work on yours.
This is a BIG opportunity. Please use it fully.
MY TEDX TALK….IMAGINE IF WE WERE 33% LESS ANGRY
The background…..
The theme……..curiosity.
The conditions.
The brief - make them laugh, make them cry, make them think (the best brief I’ve ever
had).
My prep.
The pressure.
Technical issues from the beginning of my talk.
The end result? Over to you.
OVER TO YOU…
The aim of this session.
Tomorrow morning……..some tools.
This afternoon is about nutting out your idea.
Talking it though.
Being challenged.
Asking the right questions?
Is it big enough?
Can I bring my story into this?
Does anyone care?
What stories can I share?
Make them laugh, make them cry, make them think……
Your greatest opportunity is to be authentic.
MODULE 2 - DEVELOPING YOUR SIGNATURE KEYNOTE PRESENTATION
DEVELOPING YOUR SIGNATURE KEYNOTE PRESENTATION
What is a keynote?
Where do speakers go wrong with keynotes?
What is a signature keynote?
You need to develop one.
We have a process to follow.
Getting your topic right - generally follows your story
SOME QUESTIONS THAT WE NEED TO ASK…
Who is your audience and what do they want?
What do you want to achieve from delivering your presentation?
What are the key take home messages?
What stories can you use?
How will you make it engaging?
How can you open strongly?
How can you close strongly?
SO WE HAVE A FORM THAT MIGHT HELP…
MY SIGNATURE KEYNOTE

GOAL OF THIS SECTION KEY POINTS STORIES/ANECDOTES TO SHARE
AND WE HAVE TRELLO
MODULE 3 - STORYTELLING FOR SPEAKERS
STORYTELLING MAKES GOOD SPEAKERS INCREDIBLE.
The role of storytelling for speakers.
My biggest realisations as a speaker - and where I’ve gone wrong in the past.
The stories you need to tell.
Where we go wrong when it comes to telling stories.
Of course we need a framework.
WORKSHOP - “YOUR STORY MATTERS”
KEEP WORKING ON YOUR PRESENTATION
Time to use the new magic form.
Or Trello.
We would like a slide deck (keep your slides to a minimum).
You’re going to have to rehearse (and rehearse)(and time it).
Remember the rules.
MODULE 4 - THE BUSINESS OF BEING A PROFESSIONAL SPEAKER
THE BUSINESS SIDE OF THINGS LETS SPEAKERS DOWN MORE THAN THEIR SKILLS.
You might be an awesome speaker but lousy business person…..
A lot misconceptions about the speaking business
Going to share what I have learned over the years (my journey)
Be very upfront about what has worked for me - very open.
Teach you how the industry works
Most importantly I will show you how to generate income as a speaker.
We are going to share a complete online programme with you.
WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON MISTAKES? (AG TO NUMBER AND ADD 15)
They don’t treat speaking as a business - no business model or a plan
Think they will make a living by being paid by others to speak - not that simple any more
Don’t market themselves
They undercharge
Get precious and too hard to work with
Present too much
Don’t stay relevant
They don’t build relationships
They don’t believe in themselves enough
They don’t invest in their speaking
MY BUSINESS MODEL
HOW THE INDUSTRY WORKS
AND OF COURSE WE HAVE A FRAMEWORK
YOUR SPEAKER BUSINESS “TO DO” LIST
MODULE 5 - ADVANCED AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT
ADVANCED AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT
It all starts with having the right attitude.
Getting prepared on every level.
Stage presence - what is it, have you got it.
When you are on you really need to be on.
We need to master the “art of reading a room”.
The power of the pause.
Applying authenticity.
Be vulnerable.
Use your voice.
The right body language versus the wrong body language.
Look into the white of their eyes.
The best kind of humour to use.
Reacting to things that happen - the good, the bad and ugly.
ADVANCED AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT
Eye contact is vital:
Do look at individuals
Do hold eye contact
Don’t look at the one spot
Don’t forget the front, back or side rows.
Don’t look over the heads of the audience.
Don’t ever look a little distracted (look out the window).
Don’t keep looking at your watch.
Be prepared to take action if you are losing them.
WORKSHOP - “YOUR STORY MATTERS”
KEEP WORKING ON YOUR PRESENTATION
How are going?
Tomorrow morning is the big day….
Rehearse, rehearse….
How the presentations will work.
Starting earlier.
Dress accordingly.
A schedule (names drawn out of hat).
Present in groups.
TIME TO DELIVER YOUR TEDX TALK
MODULE 6- MARKETING YOURSELF AS A SPEAKER
MARKETING YOURSELF AS A SPEAKER
Why it’s so important
Most speakers are terrible at marketing themselves
Building your speaker brand. Where do we start?
Let’s talk about your values and what you stand for
YOUR SPEAKER VALUES NEED TO REFLECT THE VALUES YOU LIVE BY.
NOW LETS GO A LITTLE DEEPER ON YOUR BRAND DEVELOPMENT
Develop a strong brand.
Make it align with you (personal branding is tough).
Make sure, that like all good branding it runs through everything.
Be clear on the message you want to send.
What’s the one word you want your branding to suggest?
Let’s look at AG’s.

  • 2. Let’S SET THE SCENE FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS

  • 112. MODULE 2 - DEVELOPING YOUR SIGNATURE KEYNOTE PRESENTATIONWORKSHOP - “YOUR STORY MATTERS”
  • 113. WORKSHOP - “YOUR STORY MATTERS”
  • 114. IF YOU COME TO A SPEAKING SKILL RETREAT YOU NEED TO SPEAK. We are all familiar with TED and TEDx talk right? Awesome to learn from. You are going to develop you own 15 minute presentation and deliver it on Sunday morning. We are going to film it. So you need to develop it. Where do we start? Let’s review what we just covered? OK, so we can apply that. Let’s review a 15 minute TEDx talk - and see if we can make sense of how it is put together. Then you get to start work on yours. This is a BIG opportunity. Please use it fully.
  • 115. MY TEDX TALK….IMAGINE IF WE WERE 33% LESS ANGRY The background….. The theme……..curiosity. The conditions. The brief - make them laugh, make them cry, make them think (the best brief I’ve ever had). My prep. The pressure. Technical issues from the beginning of my talk. The end result? Over to you.
  • 116.
  • 117. OVER TO YOU… The aim of this session. Tomorrow morning……..some tools. This afternoon is about nutting out your idea. Talking it though. Being challenged. Asking the right questions? Is it big enough? Can I bring my story into this? Does anyone care? What stories can I share? Make them laugh, make them cry, make them think…… Your greatest opportunity is to be authentic.
  • 118. MODULE 2 - DEVELOPING YOUR SIGNATURE KEYNOTE PRESENTATION
  • 119. DEVELOPING YOUR SIGNATURE KEYNOTE PRESENTATION What is a keynote? Where do speakers go wrong with keynotes? What is a signature keynote? You need to develop one. We have a process to follow. Getting your topic right - generally follows your story
  • 120. SOME QUESTIONS THAT WE NEED TO ASK… Who is your audience and what do they want? What do you want to achieve from delivering your presentation? What are the key take home messages? What stories can you use? How will you make it engaging? How can you open strongly? How can you close strongly?
  • 121. SO WE HAVE A FORM THAT MIGHT HELP… MY SIGNATURE KEYNOTE PRESENTATION DATE: TITLE: DURATION: LOGISTICS: INTRODUCTION KEY POINT #1 KEY POINT #2 KEY POINT #3 KEY POINT #4 KEY POINT #5 CONCLUSION TIMINGS HOW DID I GO? GOAL OF THIS SECTION KEY POINTS STORIES/ANECDOTES TO SHARE

  • 123. MODULE 3 - STORYTELLING FOR SPEAKERS
  • 124.

  • 137. KEEP WORKING ON YOUR PRESENTATION Time to use the new magic form. Or Trello. We would like a slide deck (keep your slides to a minimum). You’re going to have to rehearse (and rehearse)(and time it). Remember the rules.
  • 138. MODULE 4 - THE BUSINESS OF BEING A PROFESSIONAL SPEAKER
  • 139. THE BUSINESS SIDE OF THINGS LETS SPEAKERS DOWN MORE THAN THEIR SKILLS. You might be an awesome speaker but lousy business person….. A lot misconceptions about the speaking business Going to share what I have learned over the years (my journey) Be very upfront about what has worked for me - very open. Teach you how the industry works Most importantly I will show you how to generate income as a speaker. We are going to share a complete online programme with you.
  • 140. WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON MISTAKES? (AG TO NUMBER AND ADD 15) They don’t treat speaking as a business - no business model or a plan Think they will make a living by being paid by others to speak - not that simple any more Don’t market themselves They undercharge Get precious and too hard to work with Present too much Don’t stay relevant They don’t build relationships They don’t believe in themselves enough They don’t invest in their speaking
  • 143. AND OF COURSE WE HAVE A FRAMEWORK

  • 156.
  • 157.
  • 158. YOUR SPEAKER BUSINESS “TO DO” LIST
  • 159. MODULE 5 - ADVANCED AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT
  • 160.
  • 161. ADVANCED AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT It all starts with having the right attitude.
  • 162. ADVANCED AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT Eye contact is vital: Do look at individuals Do hold eye contact Don’t look at the one spot Don’t forget the front, back or side rows. Don’t look over the heads of the audience. Don’t ever look a little distracted (look out the window). Don’t keep looking at your watch. Be prepared to take action if you are losing them.
  • 163.
  • 164. WORKSHOP - “YOUR STORY MATTERS”
  • 165. KEEP WORKING ON YOUR PRESENTATION How are going? Tomorrow morning is the big day…. Rehearse, rehearse…. How the presentations will work. Starting earlier. Dress accordingly. A schedule (names drawn out of hat). Present in groups.
  • 166. TIME TO DELIVER YOUR TEDX TALK
  • 167. MODULE 6- MARKETING YOURSELF AS A SPEAKER
  • 168. MARKETING YOURSELF AS A SPEAKER Why it’s so important Most speakers are terrible at marketing themselves Building your speaker brand. Where do we start? Let’s talk about your values and what you stand for
  • 169. YOUR SPEAKER VALUES NEED TO REFLECT THE VALUES YOU LIVE BY.
  • 170. NOW LETS GO A LITTLE DEEPER ON YOUR BRAND DEVELOPMENT Develop a strong brand. Make it align with you (personal branding is tough). Make sure, that like all good branding it runs through everything. Be clear on the message you want to send. What’s the one word you want your branding to suggest? Let’s look at AG’s.
