Spawn production is the first step in mushroom cultivation and involves precise laboratory procedures. There are three main steps - raising a pure culture, preparing mother spawn, and multiplying the spawn. Research found that larger grain sizes like wheat, sorghum and maize are better for spawn production than smaller grains like teff, as they allow for better aeration and nutrient exchange for the growing mycelium. In Ethiopia, spawn availability is a major limitation for the mushroom industry.
