With most startups failing due to founder conflict and the poor decision-making, we’re creating an toolkit that predicts & increases the probability of a team’s success, by fixing founder conflict.
- 65% of startup teams fail due to unresolved founder conflicts according to Harvard research.
- The company proposes an AI toolkit called SPATZ to monitor and help resolve disputes, spats, and conflicts within startup teams in real-time.
- By tracking resolved vs. unresolved issues, the system would generate predictive data to help investors assess a team's chances of success before investing.

This document introduces Spatz.ai, a startup that aims to create a toolkit to help resolve founder conflicts which cause 65% of startups to fail. The toolkit would use objection intervention and a 3-step app to resolve disputes before they become toxic. It would also collect resolved and unresolved data to help investors predict success rates. The initial focus is providing the toolkit free to accelerator teams to collect data and study effects. The business model is a $100/team SaaS fee per batch, with a projected $210,000 revenue from 100 accelerators in 2023. The founding team currently consists of Desmond Sherlock as co-founder, with openings for a psychology researcher and AI/ML scientist.

SpatzAI - Powering Bold Idea-sharing in Teams Spat by SpatDesmond Sherlock
This document proposes a toolkit called Spatz AI that aims to protect team members from minor conflicts ("spats") that discourage bold idea sharing. The toolkit uses machine learning on real-world data to predict team success/failure and provides tools like an intervention charter and democratic peer review. The goal is to commercialize the research by 2024 by developing apps/plugins for team tools and conducting a pilot program. Funding of $50-100k is requested to run the pilot program and further develop the products.

This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support.
The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support.
In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.

1. Toolkit to self-manage minor team spats
des@disputz.com | Desmond Sherlock
OUR MISSION:
“We agree on a way to protect team members
sharing conflicting or alternative views.”
2. OUR
VISION
To investigate team conduct during
spats, by creating the first codified
and scientifically proven application
to self-manage minor spats before
they become conflicts.
“65% of startup teams
fail due to founder conflict”
Prof. Noam Wasserman
THE FOUNDER’S DILEMMA
3. DISAGREEMENTS & CONFLICTING VIEWS
When we disagree we can tend to get defensive
and misconduct occurs. This can escalate making
team members hesitant to contribute conflicting
views.
DISCONNECT & MISCONDUCT
There is little recourse for team members to
resolve minor spats resulting in poor team
cohesion and a disconnect.
“65% of startup teams
fail due to founder conflict”
“Nine out of ten funded
startups are failing”
For teams to perform optimally
they need to feel psychologically safe.
THE
PROBLEM
4. Use the SPATZ Code of Misconduct app to
OBJECT to misconduct during a disagreement.
Then, when necessary, the SPATZ Network & AI
to independently review any unresolved spats.
OUR PROPOSAL
“We agree on a WAY to
protect team members
sharing conflicting views.”
5. We will be able to measure team member’s ability to be accountable
ie ACCOUNTABILITY. Our prediction is most are able to be accountable
at P1 & P2 and will not need to use the Spatz review network. But if
the dispute escalates to P3 and P4 then obviously the spat is more
serious than we think.
Objections & Accountability
SPATZ AI & ML DATA
• Of 123 Cautions, 55 spatz (44%) will escalate to Objections
• Of 55 Objections, 10 spatz (8%) will escalate to Stops
• Of 10 Stops, 3 spatz (2.4%) evaluated by Spatz AI + network vote
• Of 3 votes taken, 1 person (.8%) will resign or be dismissed
Predictive Data:
6. FREE for all startups and startup accelerators
to use initially. It will be easier for startup
teams to use this toolkit than to retrofit an
existing organization, we feel.
