3. The Apprenticeship Levy 2017 :
Introduction
In July 2015 the Government announced the introduction of an apprenticeship levy.
Businesses will start paying the levy in April 2017.
The levy is designed to encourage employers to embrace apprenticeships as a way
of meeting future skills needs.
The levy will be charged at 0.5% of payroll for businesses with a wage bill greater
than £3,000,000.
Worked Example
Employer A has a payroll of £10,000,000
• Levy charge = 0.5% x £10,000,000 = £50,000
• Less Allowance of £15,000
• Overall Levy = £35,000.00
The revenue from the levy will then be presented as a digital training voucher which
can be used against a variety of apprenticeship options.
4. What are apprenticeships?:
Apprenticeships are work based training programmes designed to develop talent
within your business:
• They are real jobs
• Offer training programmes, delivered on and off the job
• Contain nationally recognised qualifications, from GCSE equivalent up to
post-graduate level
• Support new or existing employees
As an employer who offers apprenticeships you can benefit from:
• Attracting new and enthusiastic talent to your business
• Shaping young people into the kind of employees you need
• Better skilled and qualified employees
• Committed staff, who recognise the investment you have made in them
• Improved staff retention, including allowing them to re-train into new
roles

Apprenticeships are paid positions within your company where delegates are required
to work a minimum of 30 hours per week.
The goal of the apprenticeship programme is to develop future talent who are experts

The apprentices are assessed using a variety of different methods including knowledge
based assignment in a traditional academic setting and competency or “on the job”
assessments administered and evaluated by the employer.
