Sorghum, also known as jowar, is an important cereal crop cultivated primarily for grain and fodder. It originated in Africa and was later spread to India, China, and the United States, which is now the largest producer. Sorghum grows well in hot, dry climates and prefers loamy soils. It requires good seedbed preparation and sowing is done from June to July. Main varieties grown include Hegari, JS-2002 and JS-263. Fertilizers like DAP and urea are applied to boost yields. Pests like bugs and diseases like ergot and leaf blight impact production. Average yields in Pakistan are estimated at 1361 kg/ha.
