2. Joh 6:1 After this Jesus went away to the other
side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of
Tiberias.
Joh 6:2 And a large crowd was following him,
because they saw the signs that he was doing on
the sick.
Joh 6:3 Jesus went up on the mountain, and
there he sat down with his disciples.
Joh 6:4 Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews,
was at hand.
Joh 6:5 Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that
a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus
3. said to Philip, "Where are we to buy bread, so
that these people may eat?"
Joh 6:6 He said this to test him, for he himself
knew what he would do.
Joh 6:7 Philip answered him, "Two hundred
denarii would not buy enough bread for each of
them to get a little."
Joh 6:8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon
Peter's brother, said to him,
Joh 6:9 "There is a boy here who has five barley
loaves and two fish, but what are they for so
many?"
4. Joh 6:10 Jesus said, "Have the people sit
down." Now there was much grass in the
place. So the men sat down, about five
thousand in number.
Joh 6:11 Jesus then took the loaves, and
when he had given thanks, he distributed
them to those who were seated. So also the
fish, as much as they wanted.
5. Joh 6:12 And when they had eaten their fill,
he told his disciples, "Gather up the leftover
fragments, that nothing may be lost."
Joh 6:13 So they gathered them up and filled
twelve baskets with fragments from the five
barley loaves left by those who had eaten.
Joh 6:14 When the people saw the sign that
he had done, they said, "This is indeed the
Prophet who is to come into the world!"
6. Of all the miracles that the Lord performed,
this is the only one that is recorded by all four
Gospels (Matt.,Mark, Luke andJohn).
7. It was performed in the presence of many
people than the other miracles.
It was a miracle of creation whereas all of the
miracles, except the turning of the water to
wine, were miracles of restoration.
It was a picture of Christ. This miracle
foreshadowed the person of Christ, the Bread
of life, being broken for us.
8. He asked Philip not Because He didn’t know
what to do but to test HIM.
He knew He would feed the 5,000 with five
loaves and two fish before Andrew told Him
about the boy’s lunch.
Through all of this He is in total control.
9. Christ command “Have the people sit down”
was a test of the disciples’ obedience.
It was not the disciples’ place to question but
to obey.
They simply obeyed without question.
10. How do you see God’s
orderliness in
this miracle?
Ans. The people
were seated by groups.
“For God is not a God of disorder but of peace—
as in all the congregations of the Lord’s people.
But everything should be done in a fitting and
orderly way.” (1 Cor. 14:33,40)
11. He was able to use the smallest things to
accomplish His purposes.
“But God chose the foolish things of the world
to shame the wise; God chose the weak things
of the world to shame the strong.” (1Cor. 1:27)
12. The disciples distributed the food in
obedience to Christ’s command
They had twelve baskets of food left over-one
basket per disciple.
13. The number fed Scripture Number of Type of Baskets
fish and basket remaining
loaves
5,000 Matt, 14:13-21, 2, fish, 5 Kophinous (a 12
Mk.,6:32-44, loaves small hand
Luke 9:9-17; basket used
John 6:1-13 by the Jews)
4,000 Matt. 15:29-39: Few fish; 7 spuris (a 7
Mark 8:1-9 loaves large basket
used by the
Gentiles)
14. The scholars contend that the feeding of the
5000 was on the Jewish side of the sea of
Galilee. Further, the feeding of the 4,000
seems to have occurred on the eastern shore.
There were 12 tribes of Israel and 7 major
Gentile Nations at the time in history.
Therefore this miracles was designed to show
that Christ was sufficient for the Jews and the
Gentiles. He is sufficient for the whole world.
15. If we believe that Christ is sovereign then we
should obey and not question Him.
If we believe that He knows everything
(Omniscient) then we should surrender our
worries and concerns to Him.
If we want to be blessed, then we should
always bless Him and other people whom He
wants to bless.
If we believe He is sufficient then we should
trust Him in all our needs.
16. 14 After the people saw the sign Jesus
performed, they began to say, “Surely this is
the Prophet who is to come into the
world.” 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended
to come and make him king by force,
withdrew again to a mountain by himself.
17. When evening came, his disciples went down to
the lake, 17 where they got into a boat and set off
across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was
dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. 18 A
strong wind was blowing and the waters grew
rough. 19 When they had rowed about three or
four miles,[a] they saw Jesus approaching the
boat, walking on the water; and they were
frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; don’t
be afraid.” 21 Then they were willing to take him
into the boat, and immediately the boat reached
the shore where they were heading.
18. 22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the
boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while
he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed
them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to
pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the
boat was already a considerable distance from land,
buffeted by the waves because the wind was against
it. 25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them,
walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him
walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,”
they said, and cried out in fear.
27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage!
It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
19. 28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you
on the water.”
29 “Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on water
and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he
was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save
me!”
31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught
him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died
down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him,
saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
20. 45 Immediately Jesus made his disciples get
into the boat and go on ahead of him to
Bethsaida, while he dismissed the
crowd. 46 After leaving them, he went up on a
mountainside to pray. 47 Later that night, the
boat was in the middle of the lake, and he
was alone on land. 48 He saw the disciples
straining at the oars, because the wind was
against them.
21. Shortly before dawn he went out to them,
walking on the lake. He was about to pass by
them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the
lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried
out, 50 because they all saw him and were
terrified.
Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take
courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 51 Then he
climbed into the boat with them, and the wind
died down. They were completely amazed, 52 for
they had not understood about the loaves; their
hearts were hardened.
