1. The Sun and the celestial bodies which
revolve around it form the Solar System.
2. It consists of large number of bodies such as :
Planets , Comets , Asteroids , and Meteors .
3. The gravitational attraction between the Sun
and these objects keeps them revolving
around it.
4. There are eight planets :
 The Sun is the nearest star from Earth.
 It is continuously emitting huge amounts of heat and
light.
 The Sun is the source of almost all energy on the
Earth.
 In fact , the Sun is the main source of heat and light
for all the planets.
Mercury Jupiter
Venus Saturn
Earth Uranus
Venus Neptune
The planet mercury is nearest to
the sun.
It is the smallest planet of our
solar system because Mercury is
very close to the sun.
It is very difficult to observe it , as
most of the time it is hidden in the
glare of the sun.
Mercury goes around the sun 4
times while the earth is going
around once.
It can be observe just before
sunrise or just after sunset.
1.Venus is earth’s nearest
planetary neighbour.
2.It is the brightest planet in
the night sky.
3.Venus is the sixth largest
planet in the solar system.
4.Venus has no moon or
satellite of its own.
5.It rotates from east to west
while Earth rotates from west
to east.
6.It is often called a morning
or an evening star , although
it is not a star.
The Earth is the only planet in the solar system on which life is known
to exist.
Some special environmental conditions are responsible for the
existence and continuation of life on the Earth.
These include just the right distance from the Sun , so that it has the
right temperature range , the presence of water and suitable atmosphere
and a blanket of ozone.
From space , the Earth appears blue-green due to the reflection of light
from water and landmass on its surface .
The Earth has only one moon.
•The next planet , the first out side the orbit of the Earth is
Mars .
•It appears slightly reddish and , therefore , it is also called
the red planet .
•Mars has two small natural satellites.
oJupiter is the largest planet of the
solar system.
oIt is so large that about 1300 earths
can be placed inside this giant planet .
oThe mass of Jupiter is about 318
times that of our Earth.
oIt rotates very rapidly .
oIt has a large number of satellites . It
also has faint rings around it.
oIt appears quite bright in the sky.
oWe can also see its 4 large moons
with the help of telescope .
1.Beyond Jupiter is Saturn
which appears yellowish in
color .
2.what makes it unique in the
solar system its beautiful rings.
3.These rings are not visible
with the naked eyes.
4.It can be observe with a small
telescope .
5.Saturn also has a large
number of satellites.
6.It is the least dense among all
the planets . Its density is less
than water .
i. These are the outer most planets of the solar system .
ii. They can be seen only with large telescopes.
iii. Like Venus , Uranus also rotates from east to west.
iv. The most remarkable feature of Uranus is that it has highly tilted
rotational axis.
v. As a result , in its orbital motion it appears to roll on its side.
>The day on which the whole disc of the
moon is visible is known as the full moon
day.
>Every night the size of the bright part of
the moon appears to become thinner and
thinner .
>On the 15th day the moon is not visible.
>This day is known as the new moon day .
>Next day , only a small portion of the
moon appears in the sky is known as the
crescent moon .
>Then again the moon grows larger every
day .
>The various shapes of the bright part of
the moon as seen during the a month are
called phases of the moon.
>Moon doesn’t produce its own light,
whereas the sun and the other stars .
>The moon completes one rotation on its
axis as it completes one revolution around
the earth .
