Edwin Hubble's observations in the 1920s led him to conclude that the universe is expanding. He found that the farther away galaxies are, the faster they are moving away from us. This provided evidence that the universe began in a massive expansion known as the Big Bang. In 1965, Penzias and Wilson discovered cosmic microwave background radiation, which supported the Big Bang theory by showing remnants of radiation from the early universe. The composition of the universe has changed over time as stars formed and died, creating heavier elements through nuclear fusion.
