Astronomical bodies in the universe
The solar system is a group of astronomical bodies.
It is made up of the sun and other bodies: Planets, satellites and
comets.

• Luminous astronomical bodies: stars give off light and heat.
These are called stars.

• Non luminous astronomical bodies:

they reflect the light from
the sun and the stars, like planets, satellites and comets.
The sun

• It is a yellow coloured star.
• It is a luminous astronomical body which gives off light and
heat.
• It is very important for life on Earth.

• It is one hundred times larger than the Earth.
• It is about 149 million kilometers away from us.
Planets

• There are nine planets that orbit around the sun in the Solar
System.

• All planets fall in 2 groups: Inner and Outer planets.
• Inner Planets: Mercury , Venus, Mars and Earth are called

inner planets. They are closest to the sun. For this reason,
they receive more heat and light. They are small, rocky
planets.
• Outer Planets: These are Jupiter , Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and
Pluto.

•

They are farther from the Sun. These planets are larger in size.
They are made mostly of gases.

•

Pluto is the farthest planet from the Sun. It is also the smallest
one.
• Between Inner & Outer Planets ,there is a ring of small bodies ,
which are made of rock & metal, these are called Asteroids.
• They also keep moving around the Sun .This ring is also called
Asteroids Belt.
The Earth

• It is the third planet from the Sun.
• Its shape is spherical, but slightly flattened at the poles.
• It appears blue in space because 70% of its surface is
covered by water.
• It is called The blue planet.
• Moon is the only satellite of the Earth.
Rotation and Orbit
Rotation

• The Earth is always moving. It rotates on its imaginary axis.
• It takes 24 hours to rotate completely.
• Rotation of the Earth on its axis causes day and night.
Orbit

• The Earth also moves around the sun. This movement is called
orbit.
• The Earth takes about 365 days to complete an orbit. This
movement of the earth around the sun is what causes
seasons.
The Big Bang Theory

• The Big Bang created a huge fireball, which cooled and
formed into tiny particles.
• Everything in the universe is made up of these tiny
particles, called matter.
