The Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission aims to promote solar energy through photovoltaic and thermal systems for power generation as well as other renewable technologies like biomass and wind. It has three phases running from 2008-2022, with 106 off-grid solar power projects totaling 40.6 MW already sanctioned. Major goals include creating 20,000 MW of solar power by 2022, developing solar manufacturing capabilities of 4-5 GW by 2020, and establishing specialized solar energy courses in universities.
