Social Networking Sites and Reference Services
Social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace offer opportunities for libraries to promote resources and services, build relationships with users, and provide reference services. Some current library uses include providing links to digital reference on their pages, communicating with users through private messages and comments, and posting questions from reference services on sites like Twitter. While social media raises questions around user expectations and public questioning, it also allows librarians to reuse answered content and potentially strengthen digital reference interactions.

On the last day of CSWE’s Annual Program Meeting at 10:00 AM in the Dallas Ballroom A-2, Nancy J. Smyth, Melanie Sage, Jonathan Singer, and I are presenting about how social work educators can use technology for career-long learning. Nancy, Melanie and I introduced the idea of professional learning networks (PLN) to a packed room at Social Work Distance Education Conference in April, and wanted to bring the practice to the #APM17 crowd. A PLN incorporates technology-based tools and processes in a way that allows individuals to stay up-to-date and share information about current news, practice knowledge and current research findings. We will be talking about the mechanics, advantages and disadvantages of establishing a PLN. One resources we will be sharing is our Professional Learning Network (PLN) Worksheet, which takes a social worker through the steps of creating their own PLN.

Social networking tools like Facebook and blogs can be used in education to help students connect with each other and teaching staff. Research shows that using Facebook groups for university courses helps students bond as a team, maintain connections, and get academic support from peers. While some critics argue social media can be distracting, studies find that students primarily use it to discuss course content, share information about assignments, and seek moral support around academic demands from close friends. When used strategically in closed groups, social networking shows potential to enhance student motivation, retention, and engagement with learning.
Effect of online social networking sites on student engagement and achievement
This paper reviews research on the relationship between online social networking sites (SNSs) and student engagement and achievement. Some research has found positive connections, with SNSs increasing engagement through collaboration and interaction, but negatively impacting achievement through distraction. Other studies found negative relationships, with SNS use linked to lower engagement and performance. Much of the research also shows no conclusive evidence of impacts either way. Overall, SNS participation seems to positively correlate with engagement but negatively with achievement. Further research is still needed to better understand this complex relationship between emerging technologies, student behaviors, and academic outcomes.
2012 Social Media in Higher Education Results
In it's third year, the 2012 Social Media in Higher Education survey is a study conducted by Pearson in conjunction with the Babson Survey Research Group on how today's faculty are using social media in their personal, professional and teaching lives. These results were presented by Mike Moran of Converseon, Jeff Seaman of the Babson Survey Group, and Hester Tinti-Kane of Pearson Learning Solutions at the Social Media for Teaching and Learning event in Boston, MA on Oct. 19th.

Andersonville - Hist 141
The Union POW camp at Andersonville, Georgia was opened in 1864 to relieve overcrowding at other prisons and guard fewer prisoners more remotely. It was located 65 miles from Macon. By June, the hastily constructed 26.5 acre stockade held over 22,000 prisoners, swelling to over 32,000 by August in severely overcrowded and unsanitary conditions that led to rampant disease and 12,912 deaths. After the war, camp commander Henry Wirz was tried and hanged for war crimes relating to conditions at Andersonville.

The Spanish and French began exploring Florida in the 16th century, with the Spanish eventually retaking Florida from the French. The Spanish established missions along the Chesapeake Bay but did not adequately man them. Florida was strategically important for defending Spain's empire in Mexico and the Caribbean. Blockchain technology offers a mechanism for automating such processes, even when only partial trust exists among participants. The data stored on the blockchain is replicated across all nodes in the network, ensuring accessibility to all participants. While this aspect facilitates traceability, integrity, and persistence, it poses challenges for adopting public blockchains in enterprise settings due to confidentiality issues. In this paper, we present a software tool named Control Access via Key Encryption (CAKE), designed to ensure data confidentiality in scenarios involving public blockchains.
