Google has changed the way they deliver search results: Their goal is to deliver relevant search results, so as a result, Social is more important than ever
Social signals are the likes, shares, votes, pins, or views people place on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or other social media sites that filter out to the various search engines.
Social signals indicate that your brand is being talked about by consumers, and this improves your SERP ranking because search engines view social signals as trusted “recommendations”.
What kinds of things can you do leading up to the conference? One is searching for the Twitter handles of your session speakers prior to the event.

There’s only so much we can share here – it’s going to take real experiementation to become comfortable with this
The first piece we’re going to talk about it one that you see over and over again. It’s the feed.
A feed is the real-time list of accumulated tweets of people you are following – if you use Facebook, you’ll notice a similar type of feed on your home page.
This aggregation let’s you quickly scan the tweets of your followers – even find information you feel is worthy of sharing.
This will become especially important when we talk about monitoring tweets from a conference.
As we just mentioned, a tweet is 140 characters or less. I promise you’ll become the best self-editor, especially when you’re trying to squeeze in a link.
You can share photos, video and more by way of links – this all counts toward the 140 character limit.
This tweet here is from Debra Jacobs reminding people to submit applications for the All-America City Youth Awards (Sarasota County is an All-America City finalist and is competing June 14-16 in Denver)
Actually a community panel just chose the youth award winner out of a really talented pool of nominees. If you haven’t already heard of Treyvon Thomas – we’re featuring his story on The Patterson Foundation’s Facebook page today.
We’re going to continue to use Debra’s tweet as an example for consistency.
When you hear people talk about a “twitter handle” think of it as a username or unique identifier to a person or organization on twitter. The @ symbol is very important part of “mentioning” someone or an organization. The @ sign both calls attention to a person or organization and is also a form of attribution
In this example, you see The Patterson Foundation conversing with CYD.
To get CYD’s attention, we started with their handle and thanked them for sharing the All-America City youth award application. Not something you have to do every time another person shares something you tweet – but it can be a nice way to break the ice with someone you’re interested in having a larger conversation with.

In the example of TPF chatting with CYD, you see the use of the #AllAmericaCity hash tag – for those of you who don’t know Sarasota is a finalist for the 2013 All-America City Awards – like the nobel prize for civic engagement – really cool. When the #AllAmericaCity hash tag is used as part of a tweet it acts as an aggregator of information related to the 2013 All-America City awards.
If I was logged in to Twitter and clicked on the #AllAmericaCity hash tag a feed – remember what we talked about earlier – would show up so you can scan tweets related to this year’s competition
How would we find or begin to monitor the #AFP13PP hash tag? One simple way is to type #AFP13PP into search.twitter.com. You can use search.twitter.com to search not only hash tags but general key words related to your profession.
Just as a hash tag is important in aggregating tweets of a certain subject matter, when tweeting at a conference, monitoring and using a hashtag with your tweets is essential. It’s where all of the good stuff happens and gets aggregated together
Add context to Tweets by using photos and video. Remember, people may be following who aren’t even attending the conference. If you’re using a smartphone, you can likely post to Twitter immediately after taking the photo. You can also use something like TwitPic to upload your photo

SO this is the framework that we’re going to talk about using social media to build your business and sell your products. Social media is not a short term fix to an ailing business. Rather it’s an important component, perhaps the most important component of building your business.
