point that Brutus has an inherent right to the throne. Brutus responds to this by saying that [he]
had rather be a villager / Than to repute himself a son of Rome (Shakespeare 1.2.180 181). While
Caesar is so intoxicated by the attention and fame he receives that he agrees to rule without any
critical thinking, Brutus, not blinded by greed or pride, is able to clearly see that taking on this
power would not be wise. Very few would be able to resist this opportunity to be at the center of

pounds for a school dance. Amy had been under a great amount of stress with organizing their
school ball, trying to find a partner, and getting a dress. She decided to drop weight before this
special occasion. While at the ball, Amy received multiple compliments about her weight loss. This
was a contributing factor to her Anorexia. Soon after, Amy s family noticed she was still dropping
weight. Amy was then given the opportunity to meet with an eating disorder therapist (Amy).
Since starting this therapy, Amy s life has changed dramatically. She began to put on weight, the

A Faustian Bargain is a complicated idea which translates in popular terms to selling one s soul
to the devil. This definition consists of four layers. The first layer consists of two different
aspects. The first aspect is doing something evil such as making a deal with the devil in order for
personal gain. The second aspect is in pursuit of a lofty ideal. In pursuing the lofty ideal; the
ideal is corrupted because of the methods to achieve it. The second layer is an unwillingness or
inability to see things as they really are, to see evil as evil. The third layer is the felling of guilt

from completing a Faustian Bargain. Within this layer one must seek whether they are a victim of

Growing up, his father had died due to pneumonia, so he quit school to work as a printer s
apprentice with the Hannibal Journal to help support his family. Working at the Virginia City
newspaper he began using his new famous pen name, Mark Twain. From there, he published his
first book in 1869 known as, The Innocents Abroad. Mark Twain wrote many books that were

Therefore what is was not generated (11.8, 11)
This argument takes place in the space of just a few lines, in which Parmenides poses a question
what need would have roused it, later or earlier, to grow, having begun from nothing? (11.8, 9
10). It here refers to what is. He assumes that everything has a reason to be generated some
specific need but he cannot see why this reason would suddenly appear. The phrase later or earlier
might point to how difficult it is to believe that at an arbitrary moment in time what is suddenly had
a reason to spring into existence. If no such need could have appeared, then what is could not have
been generated.
Parmenides applies this argument specifically to what is being generated from what is not, or
having begun from nothing (11.8, 10). And the argument certainly does seem to challenge the
idea of generation from nothing, but I have left it neutral as regards the source of what is in my
reconstruction here. I did this because I believe he can also apply Argument 1 to challenge the
idea of generation from what is, not only from what is not. It should apply to both because the
only way to say that what is is not generated is to show that it is generated from neither what is not,
nor what is. More on this in Argument 3.
Argument 2.
Someone or something must bring any given thing, including what is, into existence (supplied)
No one can make anything come into existence (11.8, 12)
Therefore what is cannot be generated (11.8, 13 14)
This is a difficult argument to suss out, especially since once again it takes place in only three
lines. But he says that the force of conviction cannot make anything come to be out of
