My review on Smosh: The Movie.
*Edit I initially planned to put in 13 reasons why (as a joke) however it really is supposed to be "10 Reasons Why" I just wanted to put that out there. Thanks.
2. Introduction
I had just recently watched Smosh: The Movie and I
thought I would just put out that this list is all of my
personal opinions, biased or not, so don’t get all triggered
by what I got to say. I personally am a big Smosh fan, and
have been a fan since 2008.
What does this have to do with the review? Well I had high
expectations for Smosh, however several things came into
play which kind of made it get less than decent reviews on
websites such as iMDB and Rotten Tomatoes. I thought I’d
see what all the fuss was about and boy are you all in for
a doozy.
It doesn’t suck its just…well just read the title.
3. 13 Reasons Why Smosh: The Movie Could
Have Been Way Better But Wasn’t
4. MY BASIS
The basis for this list is a comparison of Smosh: The Movie
as opposed to the actual shows and skits done by Smosh
on their own Youtube channel in order to come up with a
better conclusion, and to understand why this movie had
received such an embarrassing rating
Aka. A whopping 3.7/10 on iMDB
5. Smosh (the Youtube Channel)
Smosh has 22,648,912 subscribers
Smosh’s first video was uploaded in 2005
Their content is popular due to the fast pace that YouTube
has, and their videos consist of funny skits which are full
of relevant references to pop culture, videogames, and
movies.
6. Smosh: The Movie
$5,000,000 budget
Directed by Alex Winter
Plot Summary: When an embarrassing video surfaces
before their high school reunion, Ian and Anthony go
inside YouTube to try and rewrite history. Journey deeper
into YouTube with the unrated cut and outrageous bonus
content featuring Ian and Anthony, the creators of SMOSH,
on the making of their first movie, Steve Austin on being
the idol, Jenna Marbles on being Jenna Marbles and
Michael Ian Black on promoting a certain type of comedy.
7. Reason 1: Subjectively Awkward
Acting
In Smosh (YouTube) they often play exaggerated personas’
of themselves which is goofy and animated, your standard
polar opposite characters
In Smosh: The Movie they play characters that are
basically just playing themselves, not much difference to
either of them and it is brought up several times that they
are considered to be losers living with their own parents.
8. Reason 2: Editing
In Smosh: The Movie, one of the main issues is that it is
full of jumpcuts. This could just be an issue with the
directing style however it comes off as awkward with the
random changing camera angles
This as opposed to Smosh (Youtube) generally has similar
camera angles yet somehow less jumpcuts than in the
movie and it appears to be more professional.
Bad special effects in Smosh the Movie
The effects are not necessarily amazing with the Smosh
skits on youtube, however special effects are what they
are known for.
9. Reason 3: Demographic
The comedy in the movie is actually for 15 and up,
however the humor is so safe and unoffensive it could be
for grade schoolers possibly 8-10 years old. Maybe even 6.
This was even mentioned by a review on iMDB that the
script itself was written by 6 year olds
The comedy on their channel however is mainly for
preteens (12) and up.
That may not seem like such a huge difference, but we
need to take into consideration with the demographic
assuming that the main majority that will watch the
movie are the fans of the channel. It should have catered
directly to the demographic.
10. Reason 4: Structure
Smosh (The Youtube Channel) is popular due to its fast
pace and at some point relevant pop culture and highly
relatable to the audience. The skits that are made follow
an actual structure and a short subplot story.
The pacing of the videos they have on youtube match well
with Youtube’s own structure and the audiences attention
span. Quick videos normally and generally under 5
minutes in length.
11. Reason 4: Structure
However this cannot be applied as well if it were made
into a fully fledged movie due to the type of content they
have. It may appear a bit awkward seeing them differed
from what they are known by, short videos and generally a
colorful theme.
12. Reason 5: A Flawed/Boring Plot
For some reason Anthony feels he needs to delete an
embarrassing video of himself from existence to make his
high school crush not think he is a loser
The video never actually even goes viral, he is just afraid
that his crush will see it by before the party in which its
never actually stated if she could have actually seen the
video before the party considering the video was
supposedly taken from 2009. It is never mentioned when
it was uploaded.
Most character development is done mostly through
exposition and forced dialogue
13. Reason 6: The Humor
You could say the humor is supposed to cater to a specific
audience however there just is something off about the
humor especially the tone and the situation throughout
the film. The punchline comes about but due to the way
the jokes are delivered it just falls short, that and the
jokes should be well structured and relevant to the plot.
Even in Smosh’s youtube channel, even with the most
random of jokes the jokes are still relevant to the plot.
And if they seem irrelevant at first, it all comes together
by the end of the video.
But with the movie, it all just sort of seems to be lazily
thrown into the film.
14. Reason 7: Love Interests
The romantic subplot makes absolutely no sense
Ian falls in love with a girl on youtube and she is referred
to as “Butt Massage Girl” all-throughout and claims she is
his girlfriend due to her flagging all of Ian’s comments but
she later claims she was only playing hard to get. And
somehow after “fixing” the youtube video by travelling
through youtube she becomes his girlfriend. “Because
plot” –random quote from anonymous movie reviewer.
15. Reason 7: Love Interest
The second romantic subplot (or perhaps the main plot) is
that Anthony loved a girl in highschool, which really is not
explained seeing as we see Anthony with the girl only
once and she herself explains she liked the “goofy”
Anthony all along, and so he goes out and makes a fool of
himself to get the girl.
16. Reason 8: Rewatchability
I can understand why it would be difficult to make a
movie solely based around social media in itself, however
I believe the problem lies where it is featured in
“themes”
These themes can become irrelevant in the future thus it
makes it have less “re-watchability”
However in terms of their Youtube videos, some can be re-
watched due to the fact they have been around for so
long (essentially the very beginning of Youtube) and can
be re-watched for the sake of nostalgia.
This movie has no nostalgic value if they are simply
referencing to their own videos in the past.
17. Reason 9: Cash Cow
Movie companies using a recognizable name as a brand,
and making money off of it
The movie features other famous Youtubers such as Jenna
Marbles, Epic Meal Time, Dtrix, Shane Dawson and more
With the usual Smosh channel, at least its made known
that they are in fact making money by YouTube and by
joining up with other Youtubers it can build up good PR as
the fanbases sort of clash together. Eg. SmoshGames
joining with Pewdiepie
18. Reason 10: Untrue to its Predecessor
Reason 10 simply is that the film was untrue to its
predecessor, with better planning this could have actually
worked as a youtuber flick- but possibly the biggest issue
was that it was nothing like the original Smosh channel.
Smosh has so many beloved characters which could have
very well been cameos on its own, easter eggs in itself
however…this movie was just using Ian and Anthony like
ordinary guys. It simply was nothing like their Youtube
Channel.
19. Reason 10: Untrue to its Predecessor
Ian and Anthony are decent actors. I just believe that this
movie was poorly made and if instead Ian and Anthony
received a bigger budget, with they themselves to create
it, this movie could have turned out much better. It simply
was not the Smosh we all have grown to love.
20. CONCLUSION
I love Smosh for who they are, I have been a fan of their
channel since the near beginning (Around 2008), however I
believe that the main issue here is not necessarily the bad
acting, editing, or plot. They do in fact seem to act like
themselves at times, however it just ended up being a boring
movie.
In the end, Smosh still has 22,000,000 subscribers on Youtube
and continue to create content, so long as their fanbase is
happy I believe it will all be okay.
