A farmer built a well in a meadow to charge people for water during a drought. When a thirsty wanderer came to the well, the greedy farmer refused to let him drink without paying and set his dogs on the man. The wanderer turned to the valley and caused the water table to rise, flooding the field and drowning the laughing farmer. Now a large lake called Smieszek sits where the farm once was.

It was painted in 1820-21 in his London studio, from sketches in his dairy sketches, observations and reference materials. He knew the place very well, as he grew up here, in Suffolk. Jatryabhai and his family lived in the village of Khedi in India. A dam was being constructed on the river near their village, which would flood the area. The government relocated Jatryabhai's family and other villagers to a new village called Sinduri. However, life in Sinduri was difficult due to poor conditions and lack of opportunities. After several years of struggling, Jatryabhai moved his family to Mumbai in search of better prospects, though adjusting to city life brought new challenges.

Toba Lake Tourism
Toba Lake is the largest lake in Southeast Asia located in North Sumatra, Indonesia. According to local legend, the lake was formed when a young man married a magical golden fish that he had caught. They had a child together but the man broke his promise never to say the child was born from a fish. In anger and sadness, the fish woman and child disappeared into a great storm that filled the area with water to create Lake Toba. Today, the lake is considered sacred and stories say its guardian spirit is the fish woman who still protects the lake's immense depth.

accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,

The Legend about Smieszek in Żory, Poland
- 1. SEARCHING FOR THE LOST WELL
- 2. A long, long time ago there was a beautiful meadow and a small stream was crossing it. In the middle of this meadow there was a small waterhole. One peasant settled here and built a farm. One summer a terrible drought came to the country. Streams and rivers were getting drier and drier, crops were wasting away, the land was on the brink of disaster. The only thing unaffected by the drought was the small waterhole. Local peasants started to came here to take some water and the farmer decided to build a well, so that other people would have to pay him for the water. One day a very old and tired wanderer was coming by . Thirsty man approached the well and was just about to drink when the farmer came and told him to pay. The old man was begging him, but in vain. Greedy farmer forced him to go and freed his angry dogs. The old man fled , stumbling over the tree roots, chased by the farmer’s loud laughter . The man stopped, turned away and reached out his hand in the direction of the valley. Suddenly something strange happened. Water in the well rose quickly and got inside. A puddle was getting bigger and bigger, flooding the field. The water table grew quickly and the farmer stood and laughed. His laughter became louder and more frightful. He couldn’t move or stop laughting. He kept on laughting even when water reached his neck. When he got completely under water the old man could hear his laughter. His farm got under water too. On the site of the farm now there is a big lake which is called “Smieszek” . How it started…
- 3. It was our third attempt to set off to search for the lost well… Do
- 4. Unfortunately- not this one!
- 5. Maybe this one?…- but it’s forbidden to go there
- 7. Where is the lost well?
- 8. We found mushrooms in the tree trunk and strangely familiar penguins.
- 9. We didn’t find the well but we came back happy and impressed!
- 10. Maybe we will hear the farmer’s laughter some day?
