Big Data for Creating and Capturing Value in the Digitalized Environment: Unp...Ian McCarthy
Despite significant academic and managerial interest in big data, there is a dearth of research on how big data impacts
the long-term firm performance. Reasons for this gap include a lack of objective indices to measure big data
availability and its impact, and the tendency of studies to ignore the costs associated with collecting and analyzing
big data, assuming that big data automatically delivers benefits to firms. Focusing on how firms create and capture
value from big data about customers, we use the resource-based view and three dimensions of big data (i.e., volume,
variety, and veracity) to understand when the benefits outweigh the costs. Relying on the number of downloads of
mobile device applications, we find that volume of big data has a negative effect on firm performance. This result
suggests that the “bigness” of big data alone does not ensure value creation for a firm, and could even constitute a
“dark side” of big data. Because big data variety—measured as the number of types of information taken per each
application—moderates the negative effects of big data volume, simultaneous high values of volume and variety
allow firms to create value that positively affects their performance. In addition, high levels of veracity (i.e., a high
percentage of employees devoted to big data analysis), are linked to firms benefiting from big data via value capture.
These findings shed light on the circumstances in which big data can be beneficial for firms, contributing to a better
theoretical understanding of the opportunities and challenges and providing useful indications to managers.
Open branding: Managing the unauthorized use of brand-related intellectual pr...Ian McCarthy
Consumers often innovate with brand-related intellectual property (IP) without permission. Although firms often respond by exercising their legal right to stop such activity, there are a variety of situations in which consumers’ unauthorized use of brand-related IP can be desirable for a brand or in which enforcing IP rights can adversely affect a brand. This article illustrates situations in which managers may benefit from choosing to forgo exercising their IP rights. To assist managers, this article contributes a framework for understanding the managerial approaches to situations in which consumers use IP without permission.

Standardization in a Digital and Global World: State-of-the-Art and Future Pe...Ian McCarthy
We discuss how the standards emerge from an interaction between three main sources, the standards standard-setting organizations (SSOs), the competitive market forces, and the government. We present a framework (see Table I) that highlights how these sources differ and work together to shape the standardization in a digital and global context. Also, using this framework, we introduce the contribution of each article of this issue and their contribution to some of the major issues that the standardization is facing today in a digital and global world. We conclude with the suggestions of avenues for future research on this topic.

With the pace of change in the world accelerating around us, it can be hard to remember that the digital revolution is still in its early days. Massive changes have come about since the packet-switch network and the microprocessor were invented, nearly 50 years ago. A look at the rising rate of discovery in fundamental R&D and in practical engineering leaves little doubt that more upheaval is on the way.
For incumbent companies, the stakes continue to rise. From 1965 to 2012, the “topple rate,” at which they lose their leadership positions, increased by almost 40 percent1 as digital technology ramped up competition, disrupted industries, and forced businesses to clarify their strategies, develop new capabilities, and transform their cultures. Yet the opportunity is also plain. McKinsey research shows that companies have lofty ambitions: they expect digital initiatives to deliver annual growth and cost efficiencies of 5 to 10 percent or more in the next three to five years.

Manufacturing and the data conundrum: Too much? Too little? Or just right?, commissioned by Wipro, examines how manufacturers are using integrated data collection and analysis to improve production throughput, reduce costs and improve quality. The research is based on a survey of 50 C-suite executives from manufacturers in North America and Western Europe.
The survey shows that just 42% of respondents have what they consider to be a well-defined data-management strategy. However, 62% are not sure they have been able to keep up with the large volumes of data they collect, as it comes from too many sources and in a variety of formats and speeds.
The report also finds that while over 90% of manufacturers collect data from monitoring production processes, less than half have in place predictive data analytics, and less than 40% use data analysis to find solutions to production problems.

Unveiling the Secrets How Does Generative AI Work.pdfSam H
At its core, generative artificial intelligence relies on the concept of generative models, which serve as engines that churn out entirely new data resembling their training data. It is like a sculptor who has studied so many forms found in nature and then uses this knowledge to create sculptures from his imagination that have never been seen before anywhere else. If taken to cyberspace, gans work almost the same way.

Enterprise Excellence is Inclusive Excellence.pdfKaiNexus
Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.
What is Enterprise Excellence?
Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. There are three things leaders can do to engage everyone every day: maximizing psychological safety to create environments where folks learn, contribute, and challenge the status quo.
Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.

• In the era of Industry 4.0, Data has major impact on businesses,
since the revolution of networks, platforms, people and digital
technology changed the determinants of firms’ innovation and
competitiveness (OECD, 2015).
• The capacity of enterprises to access information and create

captured, stored, managed and analysed by typical
database software tools (Manyika et al., 2011)
• Knowledge arising from the information given from data
analysis processes -> major resource for enterprises to
obtain new knowledge, present added value, foster new
products, processes and markets. Hence, the ability to
manage, analyse and act on data is significant to
enterprises.

• Big data, similar to IT, has the ability to bring significant cost
reductions, delivery time, enhanced R&D and
new/improved products or services.
• However, little evidence exists on ROI for big data
applications in enterprises, showing promising issues
(Davenport & Dyché, 2013)
• Empirical evidence related to the impact of data-driven
approach and its impact to enterprises performance are
scarce and limited mainly in research for large-multinational
companies
• In addition, no research exists in the impact of big data-
driven approach in innovation performance of SMEs

• It is observed growing attention to big data and data-driven
approach from academics and professionals, since the
analysis of “big data” leads on valuable knowledge,
promotion of innovative activity transforming economy of
countries (OECD, 2015).
• There is evidence that data-driven approach has a positive
impact in enterprises’ performance (Brynjolfsson, 2011;
Davenport & Harris, 2007; Lavalle, 2010; Bakhshi et al.,
2014).
• The scope of this study is to examine the impact of data
exploitation to SMEs innovation performance.

Editor's Notes
innovation plays crucial role concerning enterprises performance and competitiveness.
Now a Fourth Industrial Revolution is building on the Third, the digital revolution that has been occurring since the middle of the last century.
It is characterized by a fusion of technologies that is blurring the lines between the physical, digital, and biological spheres.
Data provides knowledge about processes, customers, human capital and technology significant to enterprises leading to innovation.
Nowadays, “big data” is a buzzword.
Different definitions of big data…
Large streams of data generated through ICT and Internet of Things (IoT)
90% of the data in the world today was generated in just the last 2 years (IBM, 2016) -> the huge increase of sensors and connected devices known as “Internet of Things (IoT)”, since technological evolution allows enterprises concentrate various types of data
The tremendous increase of smartphones and sensors led on a significant increase of data generation and a growing need of real-time analysis and instant decision making
Volume: the sizes of data that are extremely huge- measured in exabytes… zettabyte….
Variety: heterogeneity of data types, (unstructured, semi-structured and structured).
Velocity: the ratio of data generation and the speed needed for their analysis.
Veracity: data uncertainty and the level of reliability correlated with some type of data
The increased use of digital services and Internet has transformed all the sectors in the economy.
Through DDI, almost all the sectors including retail, manufacturing and agriculture has become more service-centred, adopting the term “servicification”
A significant obstacle to adopting data-driven approach through big data analytics is the high level of technical skills required to use and exploit these systems. People with specific skills and expertise in statistics, analysis and machine learning are required in order to get valuable insights from big data.
A research gap…
Processes of leveraging big data are divided into 2 phases : Data management and Data Analysis
he first is related with the processes and technologies for data generation, storage, mining and preparation for analysis, while the second refers to the methods and techniques to analyze and get valuable insights from big data
'Organizations that are ‘leaders’ in data-driven marketing report far higher levels of customer engagement and market growth than their ‘laggard’ counterparts. In fact, leaders are three times more likely than laggards to say they have achieved competitive advantage in customer engagement/loyalty (74% vs. 24%) and almost three times more likely to have increased revenues (55% vs. 20%).‘ (Forbes, 2015)
80 smes have a least low data driven approach in decision making
Innovative SMEs with higher data exploitation … present higher turnover increase from innovation activities…
