SPECIFIC – specify what the customer needs to do
MEASUREABLE – you should be able to measure whether the customer is meeting the
objectives or not i.e. such as an amount, whether its spec/applications/visits/phone calls
etc
ACHIEVABLE – are they achievable and attainable?
REALISTIC – can they realistically achieve the target set with the resources available/
they have?
TIMEBOUND – when you want them to complete the target/objective
An explanation of a SMART targets is:
An objective for managing a customer effectively, challenging them, setting their actions
and most importantly getting them to achieve their goals.
Types of targets that can be SMARTer and can be written include:
PROCESS – this lets you know what you would like the customer to do and how they will
do it, describes who is involved, interactions and activities i.e visit 10 companies who deal
with retail vacancies and speak to the managers or who deals with recruitment, hand
your CV and ask for vacancies
IMPACT TARGETS – lets you know what the long term implications of your target
activity are, describes the longer term impact on your customer i.e attend age uk for
training on IT to improve you skills and knowledge on how to use a pc and what you use
it for such as email, job search research etc
OUTCOME TARGETS - lets you know how you will change attitudes, knowledge or
behavious (short term); describes the degree to which you expect this change i.e attend
the employability course to gain more skills and knowledge on applications, job search,
confidence, communication both verbal and written, this will improve your confidence
and attitude to employment
