embarked to uncover the countless advantages whites tend to have over those of color. By doing so,
she validated her credibility to the reader by listing her findings along with research and evidence to
supplement her claim. After reflecting on the privileges she found, McIntosh stated, ...whiteness
protected me from many kinds of hostility, distress, and violence, which I was being subtly trained
to visit in turn upon people of color (McIntosh, 3). This makes it obvious to the reader that
McIntosh s findings are unjust and should be changed. Unfortunately, most white individuals are
currently doing nothing to modify these unfair privileges. McIntosh concludes the article by posing

Last week I went to the Paulist Center in Boston to help serve a community breakfast for the
homeless. Every third Saturday of the month the organization sets up breakfast for the homeless
people around the Boston area. I decided to volunteer in the community service for two main
reasons. First, to help others in need. Secondly, I have not been involved in many community
serviceprojects through Sebs so I wanted to open new doors. This was my first year in the

Nuclear power is one of the most controversial issues of today s society. This stems from the fact
that although nuclear power holds vast amounts of potential, it currently has many problems. One
of the main problems is figuring out what to do with the waste. The waste itself is too dangerous
to dispose of in any conventional way, so presently, most of it is sealed in concrete casks and put
into storage (in bunkers) until it stops being dangerous. This might not seem like a bad idea at first,
but the problem with this idea is that the waste won t stop being dangerous for many, many years.

The Burgess Shale
The Burgess Shale, located in Yoho National Park, British Columbia, was discovered by Charles
D. Walcott in 1909. Walcott spent 18 years collecting and classifying the fossils located at this site.
The Shale was formed about 530 million years ago, in the Cambrian Period. Most Cambrian rocks
contain fossils of trilobite shells, cap shaped or flattened shells, and brachiopods (Whittington,
1985). When Walcott went looking for North American Cambrian fossils in August of 1909, he
ended up in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. He and his wife found a loose block in the ridge
they were searching near, split it open, and found what they later classified the lace crab
(Briggs, 1994). Walcott knew right away what they had discovered was something different the
soft parts of the crab, such as the limbs, were preserved. During the next season, Walcott and his
sons came back to the Shale, searching the slopes along the trail where they had discovered the
loose block to find fossil layers. Luckily for them, the Shale rock layers were almost horizontal,
and for thirty days a team quarried the ridge. The next year, they spent even longer quarrying.
The last year spent quarrying the rocks was in 1917, when Walcott was 67 (Briggs, 1994). The
rocks were removed from the ridge using picks, chisels, long iron bars, and small explosives. All

artists after World War I and which was followed by a second stage that began in North America

However, one only has to look in any modern toy store to see that today s American toys focus more
on imagination, not imitation. In contrast, however, children are usually taught language based on
convention; certain words have set meanings and certain sounds do not mean anything when put
together. Is this truly the case? Is language limited by convention and sense? Wendy Steiner writes
that language can be determined by both society and convention (The Colors of Rhetoric 93). Lewis
Many portmanteaus follow brillig, requiring a reader to use both context clues and imagination. The
nonsense words sound like many conventional words. For example, manxome is easily
associated with manly or maximum; the word feels strong and firm. The word slithy, on the other
hand, sounds like slithery and slimy. Onomatopoeia in the poem allow readers to get a sound of
the action. For example, the sword s blade goes snicker snack. This word helps the readers sense
the sound of the blade as it cuts through the monster s flesh. Though the poem may seem foreign at
first, a reader quickly makes sense of the situation and acquires an understanding of the poem s
storyline.
The storyline and themes from Jabberwocky bring readers to a deeper understanding about the
use of sound and language. Corresponding with the scary, unfamiliar place introduced in the first
stanza of the poem, readers enter a foreign place of nonsense as they struggle with reading the
first few words of the poem. As the swordsman s teacher or father instructs him to beware of the
beast in the second stanza, readers are leery at this point to continue such a jumble of convention
and nonsense found in words like manxome and vorpal (118). As the swordsman divides the

In The Odyssey, Homer uses the Cyclops to encapsulate values which are considered abnormal
in everyday society. The beasts are culturally, politically and religiously detached from
