There are three genders in Russian: masculine, feminine, and neuter. The gender of most words can be determined by looking at the last letter - masculine words often end in consonants or й, feminine words often end in а or я, and neuter words often end in о or е. Some words ending in ь can be either masculine or feminine and must be learned. Personal pronouns and plural forms also depend on the word's gender, with masculine using он and ы/и, feminine using она and ы/и, and neuter using оно and а/я.
