Arabic (plural) of Adab : meanings – “good breeding, decency,
nurture, good manners, refinement, cultured, decorum, courteous,
etiquette, propriety, social grace, to educate, discipline, the
humanities, etc.” sense of proportion and knowledge of their rightful
place in the order of things, the absence of which indicates injustice

Insha’Allah -This is a follow-up course, after completion
of 18 weeks course on the kitab “Ta’lim al-Muta’allim
Tariqit Ta’allum ” of Sheikh Tajuddin Nu’man Zarnuji

RECAP PREVIOUS LESSON

By retracing our life, we start with understanding
our basic nature as a human being - having
inherent powers and their potentialities to be
developed.

In our relationship regarding our Education – we
are to encounter, i.e. assisted by our educators -

with what is referred to as, “knowledge”.



Yet, we are born helpless and have to be cared,
nurtured, to be inculcated with discipline, taught and
developed by a Murabbi’ (EDUCATOR) – the first of
whom are our PARENTS.

Belief Submission Best or
Faith Obedience Righteous
Conviction Practice Conduct
Faith without obedience is meaningless; and obedience without Faith is
mere rituals and may even lead to hypocrisy.
Together, Faith and Obedience must lead to Righteousness with IHSAN
which essentially focus in our intention to sincerely serve Allah s.w.t.
Thus, in these three aspects can one be said to be true in his submission
to the Will of Allah (as Muslim).



II-MAN


Definition of iiman :

“Utterance with the tongue (speech);

affirmation with the heart/mind (conviction);

and manifesting through practice (actions).”

SwOBR’


By (the Token of) time (through the Ages), Verily Man is in
loss, Except such as have Faith, and do righteous deeds,
and (join together) in the mutual teaching of Truth (BIL-
HAQQ), and of Patience and Constancy (BIS-SwOBR).”
(Qur’an: al-’Asr: 103: 1-4)


“Do men think that they will be left alone
on saying "We believe" and that they will
not be tested? We did test those before
them, and Allah will certainly know those
who are true from those who are false.”
(Qur’an: Ankabut: 29: 2-3)


“Be sure We shall test you with something of fear
and hunger, some loss in goods, lives and the
fruits (of your toil), but give glad tidings to those
who patiently persevere (ASwOBIREEN).― ”
(Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 155)


“Who say: when afflicted with calamity: "To
Allah we belong and to Him is our return."
They are those on whom (descend) blessings
from their Lord and Mercy and they are the
ones that receive guidance. ”
(Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 156-157


“Nay seek (Allah's) help with patient
perseverance and prayer: it is indeed hard,
except to those who are humble. Who bear in
mind the certainty that they are to meet their
Lord, and that they are to return to Him. “
(Qur’an: Baqarah : 2: 45-46)


“O ye who believe! (ISwBIRU) persevere in patience and
constancy: (SwOBIRU)vie in such perseverance;
(ROBITwU) strengthen each other; (WAT-TAQULLAH) and
be conscious of (and fear) Allah; that ye may prosper.”
(Qur’an: Aali’Imran: 3: 200)

“O my son! Establish regular prayer, enjoin what is just, and
forbid what is wrong: (WASw-BIR)and bear with patient
constancy whatever betide thee; for this is firmness (of
purpose) in (the conduct of) affairs.”
(Qur’an: Luqman: 31: 17)

• REFLECTION: A Parable

From the ocean is the source for rain, dew and snow where it begun.

It is the destiny for water to flow - from the snow and glaciers on
mountains, it continue its journey as rivers and streams towards the
sea. It will not cease doing so.

Sometimes its journey is unimpeded, or its content increases with rain
and snow or from other sources which unites with the mainstream –
usually adding strength and purity.


• Or it may even be assisted by man’s ingenuity through various
irrigations, dams and drainage.
• But flowing water will always have to face various obstacles and
impediments.
• If it can, these obstacles and impediments would be cleared and
overcome by sheer force and momentum of the water.
• But if it cannot do so, it will seek other ways to traverse its course
especially by avoidance.


• Even when its entire movement is impeded, it will continue in gathering
strength, although seemingly motionless. Water naturally will always be
attracted to each other, no matter how different their quality may be.
No matter where they come from.
• In Unity, indeed is strength and power.

• Water naturally should be flowing continuously to remain pure, for
stagnant water leads to the breeding of algae and pollution.


Even when it could not move over earth’s surface, it will try to go
underground – for its efforts to journey to the sea has to be done,
whether seen or unseen by others.

Even if the journey requires water to flow, drip by drip, over a long
period of time – it will continue to do so.

Unabated and so relentlessly undeterred, not allowing its spirit to ever
be in despair by whatever obstacles, until it meets the sea.


No matter how hard the rocks may be, water has been given the power
even to destroy whatever is in its way. So mountains and hills are not an
impossible challenge. It is a matter of time.

It is as though the life of water is only “to return to its source, its
beginning”:

"In-naa lil-laahi - wa in-naa – ilai-hi raa -ji-`uun“
To Allah we belong to, and unto Allah
we shall all be made to return to.


Allah s.w.t. teaches us to supplicate to Him with this Du’a:

ROB-BA-NAA –AF-RIGH – ‘A-LAI-NAA – SwOB-RAN –
WA - TAWAF - FA-NAA – MUS - LI - MEEN

“Our Lord! pour out on us patience and constancy, and Take
our souls unto Thee as Muslims (who bow to Thy will)"!
(Qur’an: A’raf: 7: 126)


“True piety (righteousness) does not consist in turning your faces
towards the east or the west - but truly pious is he who believes in
Allah, and the Last Day; and the angels, and revelation, and the
prophets.....”


“.... and spends his substance - however much he himself may
cherish - it - upon his near of kin, and the orphans, and the needy,
and the wayfarer, and the beggars, and for the freeing of human
beings from bondage; and is constant in prayer, and renders the
purifying dues ...”


“ ... and [truly pious are] they who keep their promises
whenever they promise, and are patient in misfortune and
hardship and in time of peril: it is they that have proved
themselves true (SwODAQU), and it is they, they who are
conscious of Allah (MUT-TAQUUN).”

• PATIENCE IN – Striving diligently to avoid committing sins ;
refraining from following our desires (HAWA’) and evil temptations
which directs towards disobedience (MA’-SIYAH))towards Allah’s
command; avoiding company and occasions (gatherings) which
may bring shame to one’s good name.
• This requires firstly knowledge of the Shari-’ah, as well as
knowledge concerning the (HAAL) state of our Nafs (Self). With
these, a constant struggle must be waged to submit it to the Will of
Allah (ADDEEN AL-ISLAM), with utmost sincerity (IKHLASw) .

• PATIENCE IN – Facing whatever difficulties and hardship which
Allah’s test determines; to bear the pain and suffering from people or
others who oppress us just because of our upholding our religious
duty.
• This requires commitment, preparedness and readiness to make
sacrifices. Thus the importance of knowledge of Allah, His promise of
reward and warning of punishment – paradise or Hell-fire in the
eternal Hereafter; the life of prophets, those who are true, martyrs and
the righteous, etc. must be studied, appreciated and emulated.

• PATIENCE IN – Not giving up the cause of obedience; never to
slacken in our devotion and worship; in speaking for the truth always
determine to eradicate falsehood and evil; being true to our promise
and covenant to remain as Allah’s dutiful and loyal servants; never
to backslide nor compromise our principles; but to go all the way
with complete trust in Allah’s decision, seeking to please and gain His
Acceptance and Pleasure (MAR-DwAA-TIL-LAAH).
• Thus ‘patience’ requires ‘courage’ ( SHAJA-’AH). How to attain
this ...?

“Take from me these five (advice):
• Do not place your hope on any one except to your Lord (Allah);
• Do not fear anything except to fear committing sin against Him;
• Do not have any misgiving in learning whatever that you do not
from any one else;
• When you are asked something which you do not as yet know,
(have the courage to) say: ‘ I don’t know ! ’
• (Be patient and remember that ) Patience (AS-SwOB’) is from Faith
(IIMAN), its place is just like the head is to the body.”
(Al-Akhlaq wal Wajibat)


“Those whose efforts have been wasted in
this life while they thought that they were
acquiring good by their works”
(Qur’an: Kahfi: 18: 104)


“They are those who deny the Signs of their Lord and the
fact of their having to meet Him (in the Hereafter): vain
will be their works, nor shall We on the Day of
Judgment, give them any Weight.”
(Qur’an: Surah Kahfi: 18: 105)


”All praise is due to Allah, who has guided us unto this;
for we would certainly not have found the right path
unless Allah had guided us!”

And salutations of Allah and Peace be upon the
Messenger of Allah and upon His household
and Companions .

"O our Sustainer! Thou hast not created [aught of] this
without meaning and purpose. Limitless art Thou in Thy
glory! Keep us safe, then, from suffering through fire!

65

"O our Sustainer! Whomsoever Thou shalt commit to the fire,
him, verily, wilt Thou have brought to disgrace [in this world];
and such evildoers will have none to succour (help) them.”

66

"O our Sustainer! Behold, we heard a voice call [us] unto faith,
`Believe in your Sustainer!' - and so we came to believe.
O our Sustainer! Forgive us, then, our sins, and efface our bad
deeds; and let us die the death of the truly virtuous!”

"And, O our Sustainer, grant us that which Thou hast promised us
through Thy apostles, and disgrace us not on Resurrection Day!
Verily, Thou never failest to fulfil Thy promise!"

O Allah! We beseech You help to make us to remember
and be grateful towards You, and make us serve
(worship) You in the best way.

“O my Sustainer (Lord)! ! Inspire me so that I may forever be
grateful for those blessings of Thine with which Thou hast
graced me and my parents, and that I may do what is right [in
a manner] that will please Thee; and include me, by Thy grace,
among Thy righteous servants!” (Qur’an: Naml: 27: 19)

“O my Sustainer (Lord)! Inspire me so that I may forever
be grateful for those blessings of Thine with which
Thou hast graced me and my parents, and that I may
do what is right [in a manner] that will meet with Thy
goodly acceptance; and grant me righteousness in my
offspring [as well]. Verily, unto Thee have I turned in
repentance: for, verily, I am of those who have
surrendered themselves unto Thee!””
(Qur’an: Ahqaf: 46: 15)

"Our Lord! Make of us Muslims bowing to Thy (Will) and of our
progeny a people Muslim bowing to Thy (Will) and show us our
places for the celebration of (due) rites; and turn unto us (in
Mercy); for Thou art the Oft-Returning Most-Merciful.

“Our Lord ! Grant that our spouses and our offspring be a joy to
our eyes, and cause us to be foremost amongst those who are
conscious of Thee! (as ‘mut-taqqin’).”
(Qur’an : al-Furqan: 25: 74)

"Our Lord! pour out constancy on us and make our steps firm;
Help us against those that reject faith."
(Qur’an: Baqarah: 2:250)

“Our Lord ! Let not our hearts swerve from the truth after You
have guided us; and bestow upon us the gift of Thy Grace
(Mercy): verily, You are the (true) giver of Gifts (bestowals).”
(Qur’an : Aali ‘Imran : 3 : 8)

“Our Lord ! Condemn us not if we forget or fall into error; Our
Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay on
those before us : Our Lord ! Lay not on us a burden greater
than we have strength to bear. Blot out our sins, And grant
us forgiveness, Have Mercy on us. You are our protector :
Help us against the unbelievers.”
(Qur’an : al-Baqarah : 286)

"Our Lord! Give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter
and save us from the torment of the fire!"
(Qur’an : al-Baqarah: 2 : 201)

“(May) Allah grant His Reward upon Muhammad, salutations
of Allah and Peace be upon him and his family, in accordance
with what he deserves (in Allah’s knowledge & estimation).”

And salutations of Allah and Peace be
upon our Leader Muhammad, and upon
His household and Companions .

”Glory to thy Lord the Lord, of Honour and Power! (He is free)
from what they ascribe (to Him)! And Peace on the
Messengers! And praise to Allah, the Lord and Cherisher of
the Worlds.”

(Qur’an : Saffat: 37 : 180-182)

“Grant us (these our supplication),
by Your Mercy, (O Allah, You are) the
Most Merciful of those who show Mercy!”
