UNIVERSAL DESIGN
• Universal Design is the design of products &
environments to be usable by everyone, without the need
of adaption.
• Gives children the power to be flexible and allow choices.
• This is a learning experience that works for a wide
spectrum of learners.
UNIVERSAL DESIGN
Universal Design is focused on making sure that we get those students
that have been marginalize, for whom designs for the average
student has never worked.
• Struggling Students
• ELL Students
• Students with Disabilities
• Gifted Students
• Talented Students
• Students that need to be challenged
Makes everyone a successful learner
THREE BROAD PRINCIPALS
1. Multiple Means of Representation- Provide options for language and
symbols, options for perspective, and options for comprehension
2. Multiple Means of Action & Expression- Provide options for physical
action, options for expressive skills & fluency, and options for executive
functions
3. Multiple Means of Engagement- Provides options for recruiting interest,
options for sustaining effort and persistence, and options for self-regulation.
• How does the learner pick up information?
• How do they express & act on that information?
• How are they engaged by the learning situation?
FOUR MAIN COMPONENTS
1. What are its goals?
2. What are the materials? And how are the Universally
Designed for learning?
3. What are the methods? How does the teacher go about
teaching?
4. What are the means of assessment?

  • 2. UNIVERSAL DESIGN • Universal Design is the design of products & environments to be usable by everyone, without the need of adaption. • Gives children the power to be flexible and allow choices. • This is a learning experience that works for a wide spectrum of learners.

UNIVERSAL DESIGN Universal Design is focused on making sure that we get those students that have been marginalize, for whom designs for the average student has never worked. • Struggling Students • ELL Students • Students with Disabilities • Gifted Students • Talented Students • Students that need to be challenged Makes everyone a successful learner
  • 4. THREE BROAD PRINCIPALS 1. Multiple Means of Representation- Provide options for language and symbols, options for perspective, and options for comprehension 2. Multiple Means of Action & Expression- Provide options for physical action, options for expressive skills & fluency, and options for executive functions 3. Multiple Means of Engagement- Provides options for recruiting interest, options for sustaining effort and persistence, and options for self-regulation. • How does the learner pick up information? • How do they express & act on that information? • How are they engaged by the learning situation?
  • 5. FOUR MAIN COMPONENTS 1. What are its goals? 2. What are the materials? And how are the Universally Designed for learning? 3. What are the methods? How does the teacher go about teaching? 4. What are the means of assessment?
