Discussion in this chapter focuses on consciousness and altered states of consciousness. We look at sleep and dreaming, hypnosis, meditation, and the effects of illicit drugs.

Sleep paralysis is an experience of being temporarily unable to move or talk during the transitional periods between sleep and wakefulness: at sleep onset or upon awakening. Feeling of paralysis may be accompanied by a variety of vivid and intense sensory experiences, including mentation in visual, auditory, and tactile modalities, as well as a distinct feeling of presence. This chapter discusses a variety of sleep paralysis experiences from the perspective of enactive cognition and cultural neurophenomenology. Current knowledge of neurophysiology and associated conditions is presented, and some techniques for coping with sleep paralysis are proposed. As an experience characterized by a hybrid state of dreaming and waking, sleep paralysis offers a unique window into phenomenology of spontaneous thought in sleep.

Narcolepsy
Narcolepsy is a serious cause of chronic sleeplessness. It normally develop in teen period and usually develop for life. It can be described as neurological syndrome that leads to sleepless and other symptoms that come along are short episode of the muscle failure or weakness, dreamlike hallucinations, a short period or episode f paralysis that’s when one is waking up or falling asleep them lastly there is a disjointed nighttime sleep. The disease and its symptoms usually begins at the age of10 to 20 (Schwartz, 2017). However, in other cases it starts late. Both men and women are affected at the same rate. It approximately affects 1 person out of 2,000 people. It’s a disease that is manageable. The following are types of narcolepsy, narcolepsy with cataplexy and then narcolepsy without cataplexy. The only difference is people who has narcolepsy without cataplexy are affected with sleeplessness. However, faces no muscle weakness. They don’t face severe signs. This are the two types that are today recognized by clinicians. Another rare cases arise with the injury to the hypothalamus, this is usually called secondary narcolepsy.
Causes Narcolepsy
The exact cause of narcolepsy, but researchers and scientist has identified genes that are associated with the condition. This type of gene are specifically in control of the production or yield of the chemicals founded in brain that signals sleep or awake routine or cycles. In other discussion some scientists argue that narcolepsy comes with the deficiency in secretion of the chemical hypocretin in the brain (Schwartz, 2017). In other cases some feel that it due to abnormalities in certain parts of the brain that regulate REM sleep. Then as a result these abnormalities influence the development of those symptoms. Experts feels that narcolepsy is enhanced by varied factors that comes together or relate to cause neurological disorder.
Symptoms of Narcolepsy
Excessive daytime sleepiness, this in many cases interrupt the normal happenings on a regular basis. Most people who suffers from narcolepsy has reported, memory lapse, depressed moods, mental cloudiness, and lastly lack of concentration and also energy. Cataplexy, loss of muscle tone that makes one too weak and also reduced muscle control. Certain part are interfered with such as speech and o can collapse at a given chance. It perhaps depend on the type of muscle as most of the time the act is triggered by different emotions or behaviour such as laughter and surprise. Sleep paralysis, this symptom is accompanied by one not being able to speak in the process of falling asleep or even waking up (Bassetti, 2018)). However, this type of episode are always brief and people recover very first. Hallucination, one experiences lot of delusion and they are.

A medical condition known as sleep paralysis happens when someone either falls asleep or wakes up and finds that they are immobile or paralyzed for a short period of time, usually ranging from a few seconds to a few minutes. The fact that this experience frequently takes place when the person is aware of their surroundings adds to its scary potential. A disturbance in the passage from one stage of sleep to the next, especially from rapid eye movement (REM) sleep to awake, is assumed to cause sleep paralysis.

Methodology
CONCLUSION
Sleep paralysis is a condition marked by the inability to move your body upon
falling asleep or waking up. While it often accompanied by frightening
hallucinations, sleep paralysis does not cause harm. By identifying and
treating any underlying conditions and improving your sleep health, you can
help to manage sleep paralysis to help ensure a good, fear-free night of sleep.

Sleep paralysis is a condition identified by a brief loss of muscle control,
known as atonia, that happens just after falling asleep or waking up. In
addition to atonia, people often experience hallucinations during episodes of
sleep paralysis.
It is of two types:-
• Isolated sleeping Paralysis
• recurrent sleep paralysis
Sleep paralysis is a hypnagogic or hypnopompic state with inability to
move while conscious. Sleep paralysis is simply a sign that your body is not
moving smoothly through the stages of sleep. Rarely is sleep paralysis
linked to deep underlying psychiatric problems. During the rapid eye
movement (REM) sleep stage, you’re likely to have dreams, the brain
prevents muscles in your limbs from moving to protect yourself from acting
dreams out and hurting yourself. Sleep paralysis happens when you regain
awareness going into or coming out of REM. Insomnia, disrupted sleeping
patterns, narcolepsy, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) ,generalised
anxiety disorder, panic disorder. One of the best ways to avoid sleep
paralysis is to improve the quality of your sleep. Having a set sleep
schedule with specific times for going to bed and waking up.Creating a
comfortable sleep environment that’s dark and quite.
Key Words :- Sleeping Paralysis, Conscious, Psychiatric Problems,
Insomnia, Narcolepsy.
An estimated 75% of sleep paralysis episodes also involve hallucinations
that are distinct from typical dreams. As with atonia, these can occur when
falling asleep or waking up. Hallucinations involves:-
. intruder hallucinations,
. Chest pressure hallucinations,
. Vestibular-motor (V-M) hallucinations.
