A skull fracture occurs when one of the bones of the skull breaks, usually from external trauma like a car accident or fall. There are several types of skull fractures including linear, compound, and depressed fractures. Linear fractures involve a single fracture line through the skull thickness. Compound fractures have multiple linear fractures splintering the bone. Depressed fractures push bone fragments inward which can damage the brain. Skull fractures are diagnosed using X-rays and sometimes CT scans. Treatment depends on the fracture type but may involve surgery to repair or remove bone fragments. Complications can include bleeding, infection, seizures, and cranial nerve damage.
