Historically, hospitals served as hostels providing lodging for travelers and care for the sick and poor. They had high death rates due to overcrowding and disease. Later, advances in medicine transformed hospitals into integrated healthcare systems. Currently, the healthcare system faces pressures to improve efficiency and is often inflexible and institution-like. New approaches advocate designing infrastructure based on measurable factors to be more sustainable and patient-centered. Emerging technologies will further change healthcare delivery, which is trending preventative and ambulatory, enabled by mobile devices, telehealth, and converging fields.
