Internet & World Wide Web
1. Prepared by : CH.SRILAKSHMI PRASANNA Asst.prof CSE[MREM]
Week 7
Task 1 :
Orientation & Connectivity BootCamp :
Students should get connected to their Local Area Network and access the Internet. In the
process they configure the TCP/IP setting. Finally students should demonstrate, to the
instructor, how to access the websites and email. If there is no internet connectivity
preparations need to be made by the instructors to simulate the WWW on the LAN.
AIM:-
How to connect to LAN and access the internet and also to access the websites and emails.
Requirements:
To create an RJ45 local area network in Windows, you will need:
 Several computers running Windows (computers running two different versions of
Windows can be part of the same network).
 Ethernet cards on a PCI or ISA port (with an RJ45 plug) or built into the
motherboard. When applicable, make sure the diodes on the back of the network card
light up when the computer is on and that a cable is plugged in! There are also
network adapters for USB ports, particularly in the case of wireless network adapters.
RJ45 cables in the case of wired networks:
 A hub, a device you can connect the RJ45 cables from the network's various
computers to, which are fairly inexpensive or a switch, or, as an alternative option,
a crossover cable if you want to connect just two computers.

Description:-
LAN:-
When you have several computers, it can be convenient to connect them to each other to
create a local area network (LAN).
Advantages of LAN:-
 File transfers;
 Sharing of resources (internet connection sharing, printer sharing, shared disks, etc.);
 Mobility (in the case of a wireless network);
 Discussion (mainly when the computers are remote);
 Network games.
The two types of localarea networks:
There are two main types of local network architecture:
 Wired networks, based on the Ethernet technology, which represent almost all local
area networks. Given that Ethernet networks generally use RJ45cables, people often
talk of RJ45 networks.
Fig: RJ45 Cable Fig: Wired Hub Connectivity
 Wireless networks, which generally use the WiFi technology.

Boot Camp :
It is a multi boot utility included with Apple Inc.'s OS X that assists users in
installing Microsoft Windows operating systems on Intel-based Macintosh computers. The
utility's Boot Camp Assistant guides users through non-destructive disk
partitioning (including resizing of an existing HFS+ partition, if necessary) of their hard disk
drive and installation of Windows device drivers. The utility also installs a Windows Control
Panel applet for selecting the boot operating system.

Procedure:-
Steps for connecting wired LAN:
1. Attach the RJ-45 connector to the Ethernet network port on your PC:
2. Right click on ‘My Network Places’ icons located on the desktop and in the
popup menu click on properties:
You can also find it through the My Computer window. Alternatively, click
‘Start’ from the taskbar and right click on ‘My Network Places’ option from the
popup menu. In the menu that appears select ‘Properties.

3. In the new Window that appears, under the LAN or High-Speed internet, right
on ‘Local Area Connection’ and select properties in the popup menu that
appears:

7. Prepared by : CH.SRILAKSHMI PRASANNA Asst.prof CSE[MREM]
4. In the local area connection dialog box that appears under the connection box,
scroll down and select ‘Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on ‘Properties:
5. To configure your PC, you can opt for obtaining the configuration settings
automatically or manually:
Click the option ‘Use the following IP Address’. Enter the IP address to use.
Thereafter, enter the Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server address.

8. Prepared by : CH.SRILAKSHMI PRASANNA Asst.prof CSE[MREM]
Click ‘OK’ to accept the changes or ‘cancel’ to exit the setup.
6. Check the option ‘Show icon in notification area when connected’ and #click
‘OK”:
This will enable you to know if the local area connection is connected or
disconnected.
 The way to access websites andEmails:-
Websites:-
A Web site is a related collection of World Wide Web (WWW) files that includes a
beginning file called a home page. The three primary things to make a website are

your domain name, web host and a topic. The domain name is the URL of the
website.
Fig: Website URL
EMAIL:-
Electronic mail, e-mail or email is a message that may contain text, files, images, or
other attachments sent through a network to a specified individual or group of individuals.

How to send and receive e-mail:
1. E-mail Program:
To send and receive e-mail messages you can use an e-mail program, also known
as an e-mail client, such as Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird.
Internet & World Wide Web
11. Prepared by : CH.SRILAKSHMIPRASANNA Asst. prof
CSE[MREM]
When using an e-mail client, you must have a server that stores and delivers your
messages; provided by your ISP or in some cases, another company. An e-mail client
needs to connect to the server to download new e-mail, whereas email stored online
updates automatically when you visit the site.
2. E-mail Online:
An alternative way of sending and receiving e-mail (and the more popular
solution for most people) is an online e-mail service or webmail.
Examples include Hotmail, Gmail, and Yahoo Mail.
