Henri Matisse was a renowned 20th century French painter known for his use of bold color and fluid designs. As a draftsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but primarily a painter, Matisse helped establish Fauvism and was recognized for his mastery of color and drawing techniques over his long career spanning more than half a century. One of Matisse's works, The Dance, depicts a simple structure with brutal contrasts of shades and colors depicting a circular motion and exposing nakedness to convey the joy of living.
