Simplifying & solving algebraic fractions

  • 2. MATH PROJECT: SIMPLIFYING & SOLVING ALGEBRAIC FRACTIONS Summary:  Explore resources available on the internet relating to algebraic fractions.  Make a publication that explains the processes used in simplifying and solving algebraic fractions.  Practice with interactive problems and take an online quiz.  Make a flip camera video that will be used by other students in our school system for enrichment and review.
  • 3. NORTH CAROLINA STANDARDS & OBJECTIVES  1.01 Simplify and perform operations with rational exponents and logarithms (common and natural) to solve problems.  1.03 Operate with algebraic expressions (polynomial, rational, complex fractions) to solve problems.  2.05 Use rational equations to model and solve problems; justify results.  Solve using tables, graphs, and algebraic properties.  Interpret the constants and coefficients in the context of the problem.  Identify the asymptotes and intercepts graphically and algebraically.  2.07 Use equations with radical expressions to model and solve problems; justify results.  Solve using tables, graphs, and algebraic properties.  Interpret the degree, constants, and coefficients in the context of the problem.
  • 4. TARGETED STUDENT OBJECTIVES & LEARNING OUTCOMES  Adding algebraic fractions.  Subtracting algebraic fractions.  Multiplying algebraic fractions.  Dividing algebraic fractions.  Solve problems by using rational equations.

Unit Questions  How can mathematical patterns be used to solve real world scenarios?  Why do we need to know how to operate with algebraic fractions?  How do we use algebraic fractions in the real world?
