2. Definition
Is the verbal tense that is used in the English
language to narrate events that occurred at a
specific time in the past.
The past simple usually has temporary
expressions that allude to the past, such as:
yesterday, last night, week, month, year, Tuesday,
then, When?, How long ago, etc.
Characteristics
1. Indicates an action that took place at a specific time in
the past.

3. Types (regular and irregular)
Regular Verbs Irregular Verbs
• Are called regular verbs to those who
form the past by adding the suffix 'ed'
or 'd' to the root of the verb. This past
marker helps to recognize this type of
verbs in a written text.
• Unlike regular verbs irregular verbs do
not have a past marker that helps to
recognize them. Fortunately, the group
of irregular verbs is composed of a
limited number of verbs

Affirmation in Simple Past
When we are going to make an affirmation with
the simple past we need to follow the formula:
Subject + verb in simple past + complement
Example:
• They lived in Washington.
• The dog played with the ball.
• He walked on the beach.
Negation in Simple Past
To deny something in the past the formula we
use is a bit different. This time the auxiliary
Did was used.
Subject + did not (didn't) + main verb in
infinitive + predicate
Example:
• They didn’t live in Washington
• The dog didn’t play with the ball
• He didn’t walk on the beach

5. Affirmative question in Simple Past
For an interrogation in the past we have to make use of
the auxiliary Did. Follow the formula:
Did + sujeto + verbo principal en infinitivo +
complemento
Example:
• Did they go to the cinema?
• Did the kids play the videogame?
• Did he walk on the park?
Negative question in Simple Past
Negative interrogations are used when the speaker wants to
express surprise or want to assume something. In this case we
can use the following formulas:
Informal:
Didn’t+ subject + main verb in infinitive + complement
Formal:
Did + subject + not + main verb in infinitive + complement
Example:
• Didn’t they go to the cinema?
• Didn’t the kids play the
