Simple Future Tense
It is used to express an action which has
not occurred yet and or expected to occur
after saying or in future.
Structures
I. Future tense with will/shall:
(+) affirmative: Subject + will/shall + V1
(-) negative: Subject + will/shall + not + V1
(?) question: Will/Shall + subject + V1
Usage of will or shall:
• I/We + Shall (will is acceptable)
• He/She/It/We/You/They + will (shall is
unacceptable)
Will/Shall
We use will/shall + infinitive without to:
to express a sudden decision made at
the moment of speaking.
To express intention or promise.
To express a prediction based on opinion
or beliefs.
To make a request or an offer.
Examples
1. (+) We shall go there later.
(-) We shall not go there later.
(?) Shall we go there later?
2. (+) He will call you later.
(-) He will not call you later.
(?) Will he call you later?
Be going to
We use be going to + infinitive without to:
To express an intention/plan.
To express a prediction based on
something we can observe now.
II. Future tense with be going to:
(+) affirmative:
Subject + am/is/are+ going to + V1
(-) negative:
Subject + am/is/are+ not + going to + V1
(?) question:
Am/Is/Are+ Subject + going to + V1
Examples
1. (+) They are going to marry next month.
(-) They are not going to marry next month.
(?) Are they going to marry next month?
2. (+) It is going to rain tonight.
(-) It is not going to rain tonight.
(?) Is it going to rain tonight?
