Gerund is one of the verbals in English grammar
ending with –ing but, it works as a noun and can act as
a subject, subjective complement, object of the
preposition, direct object and appositive in a sentence.
Examples:
1. She likes writing love stories. Direct Object
Explanation: Writing is the gerund in the sentence which
placed after the transitive verb likes that answers to the
question: What does she like?

2. Writing a love story is her favorite hobby. Subject
Explanation: Writing is the gerund in the sentence which
placed at the very beginning in the sentence.
3. She is writing love stories for everyone. Subjective
Complement
Explanation: Writing is the gerund in the sentence which
placed after the linking verbs (copulas) such as is, are,
were, was, look, appear, etc.
4. Her favorite hobby, writing love stories, is remarkable.
Appositive
Explanation: Writing is the gerund in the sentence which
placed between the compound subject (her favorite hobby)

or the simple subject (hobby) and the predicate
(remarkable). Sentences with appositive has commas to
give more meaning and emphasis to the subject in the
sentences.
5. Everyone likes her genre in writing love stories. Object
of the preposition
Explanation: Writing is the gerund in the sentence which
placed after the preposition such as in, after, of, for, etc.

Helping people is a responsibility of every citizen, I
believe. And I used to help everyone I could. I enjoyed the
