Talk titled 'User-centred and Participatory Cartography'
Interest in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) has been part of Geographical Information Science (GIScience) and cartography for a long time. Even before the term Geographical Information System (GIS) was invented (Tomlinson, 1967), researchers of “Man Machine Interaction” at MIT where utilising the display capabilities of the latest generation of computers to manipulate oceanic geographical information (Pivar at al., 1963). From this early start, HCI became an integral part of Cartography and GIScience research agendas. Interest focused on expert cartographers and their work in the 1960s and 1970s, and moved to wider range of specialised users in the 1980s and 1990s. This followed the spread of geographic technologies to wider audiences, culminating with the ‘Cambrian Explosion’ of maps on the internet. More recently, with the increased abilities of members of the public to create and share information, cartography became available to many, sometimes under the guise of ‘neogeography’. The talk with cover the evolution of HCI research in Cartography, focusing on participatory GIS and mapping, and demonstrating the importance of user centred design in the sharing of maps within this domain. It ends with examples of citizen science and how cartography play a role within it.

Internet of Things (IoT) is the digital skin of the physical world. It has specific requirements such as dynamicity to self-adapt to the continuously changing physical context. The world is heterogeneous and the objects should interoperate to collaborate, thus interoperability is essential. Openness and short learning curve are other requirements so that innovators (e.g. startups) can rapidly build applications with reduced time-to-market and avoid vendor lock-in. Reuse of software and hardware is also particularly important since billion of devices are expected to be deployed in the coming decades and those devices should be multi-purpose and reusable by applications from different domains and not be specific to a given domain.
OSGi has – since 15 years ago – the answers to those requirements of today’s IoT. Its powerful run-time environment for the dynamicity, its service-oriented approach hiding heterogeneity, its modularity making the reuse extremely simple, and last but not least, its open approach giving the potential to democratize the IoT.
The talk will illustrate the benefits of OSGi for IoT with concrete deployed examples, in particular in smart city domain in Europe and Japan via the collaborative projects such as ClouT and FESTIVAL.

How Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDIs) can evolve into Data Ecosystems?
This is the main question that the ongoing study addressing “Data ecosystems for geospatial data - Evolution of Spatial Data Infrastructures” (JRC/IPR/2019/MVP/2781) is addressing. It is performed by the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) in close collaboration with the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission.
The purpose of this study is to identify and analyse a set of successful data ecosystems and to address recommendations in support of the implementation of data-driven innovation in line with the recently published European Strategy for Data. It investigates factors such as relevant actors, their responsibilities and data value chains, emerging data sources (e.g. the Internet of Things) and technical/architectural approaches (e.g. digital platforms, mobile-by-default, Application Programming Interfaces). It also addresses the interoperability between data ecosystems in different sectors and/or different countries and crosscutting requirements for geospatial data.
This session is intended to share with the audience the study approach, methodological approach and first identified Data Ecosystems, and to learn from their experiences with Data Ecosystems: emergence, barriers, opportunities, sustainability, interoperability between ecosystems, etc.

Complejidades urbanísticas en la Costa Oriental del Lago de Maracaibo
En la presentación, se abordarán cuatro aspectos destacados de la ocupación poblacional en la Costa Oriental del Lago de Maracaibo, al oeste de Venezuela, la cual ha sido fuertemente influenciada por la producción petrolera. En primer lugar, se explorarán los intentos de lograr un desarrollo integral de la conurbación, que han transitado desde la elaboración de planes de desarrollo urbano específicos para cada asentamiento, pasando por la pretensión a una mancomunidad de servicios entre municipios, hasta la imposición de una gestión operacional global del área bajo los requerimientos de la industria petrolera. En segundo lugar, se examinarán los viejos y nuevos urbanismos, haciendo hincapié en los intentos de integración urbana de los campos residenciales petroleros y en la reubicación de poblaciones en nuevos desarrollos, incluso bajo acuerdos de cofinanciamiento internacional. Un tercer aspecto abordará las paradojas relacionadas con el déficit de servicios públicos, como el abastecimiento de agua y el suministro eléctrico en un área costera lacustre con abundantes recursos energéticos y con numerosos desarrollos planificados. En el cuarto aspecto, se revisarán los impactos ambientales de la explotación petrolera, incluyendo efectos como la subsidencia y el daño a los acuíferos, así como la habilitación de medidas preventivas y mitigatorias en el marco del cambio climático para proteger tanto a la población como a la propia industria de estos efectos. La presentación concluirá con el rescate de algunas visiones que han sido propuestas para lograr un desarrollo próspero en la subregión.

The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible. Don’t worry, we can help with all of this!

Artificial Intelligence for XMLDevelopment
In the rapidly evolving landscape of technologies, XML continues to play a vital role in structuring, storing, and transporting data across diverse systems. The recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) present new methodologies for enhancing XML development workflows, introducing efficiency, automation, and intelligent capabilities. This presentation will outline the scope and perspective of utilizing AI in XML development. CAKE: Sharing Slices of Confidential Data on Blockchain
Presented at the CAiSE 2024 Forum, Intelligent Information Systems, June 6th, Limassol, Cyprus.
Synopsis: Cooperative information systems typically involve various entities in a collaborative process within a distributed environment. Blockchain technology offers a mechanism for automating such processes, even when only partial trust exists among participants. The data stored on the blockchain is replicated across all nodes in the network, ensuring accessibility to all participants. While this aspect facilitates traceability, integrity, and persistence, it poses challenges for adopting public blockchains in enterprise settings due to confidentiality issues. In this paper, we present a software tool named Control Access via Key Encryption (CAKE), designed to ensure data confidentiality in scenarios involving public blockchains. After outlining its core components and functionalities, we showcase the application of CAKE in the context of a real-world cyber-security project within the logistics domain.

Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
