It is a form of the inherited blood disorder, sickle cell
disease. It affects red blood cells, turning them from round
flexible discs into stiff and sticky sickled cells.

6. Sickle cell anaemia may be classified according to the
type of the two alleles of beta-globin into the following
types :
1-Sickle cell
anaemia (HbSS)
Absence of

2-Sickle cell
trait(HbAS)
One is normal
allele of beta-
globin and
another is
sickle cell
allele of beta-
globin
8. Diagnosis
• A blood test can check for Haemoglobin S – a defective form of
haemoglobin that underlies sickle cell anaemia. In United state ,
this blood test is a part of routine new born screening done at
hospital. But older children and adults can be tested, too.
