To honor her memory on what would have been her 31st birthday, friends and family organized a fundraiser at Palm Grill to benefit the No More Tears Foundation and the education of her children. While there has been a lot of attention about the potential for MOOCs to transform higher education, far less empirical research has been conducted that explores the experiences and behaviours of learners in these online settings. A particular strength of MOOCs is the potential for thousands of learners to come together to learn. Understanding who interacts, how they interact, and why is an important part of understanding how learning may occur. This presentation aims to highlight the different ways in which people communicate and interact with one another in MOOCs, and how these interactions are related to learner characteristics, experiences and outcomes through the in-depth mixed method analysis of one case study MOOC. Educators around the world are utilizing Twitter as a personal learning environment, but how else can microblogging be used in education? From K12 to Higher Education, we will present the possibilities of Twitter and alternative tools in both instructional and student support contexts. We’ll share examples of how elementary, secondary and higher education faculty and institutions are using microblogging to augment communication in thoughtful ways, but we won’t stop there. Social media tools like this require important safety and security considerations as well as outcomes based planning. Join us and identify issues and strategies you’ll need to know about Twitter for educational purposes.

New learning communities can be understood through a theoretical framework that draws from connectivism and the learning ecosystem model. Key aspects include personal learning skills, conversation across networks, dynamic and overlapping communities, and organic connections formed between learners. Collective leadership models from nature, like those seen in bioteams, provide examples of distributed leadership styles for new learning communities characterized by fluid roles and responsibilities.
