This experiment studied Mendel s law of independent assortment through observing
three generations of Drosophila melanogaster. His law was examined by looking at
the inheritance patterns that predicted genetic linkage, mapping distances and
interference. Genes are located along chromosomes and the distances between
them vary. During recombination, these genes may become unlinked. The
frequency to which this occurs relies on the recombination frequency, in which a
greater value represents a greater distance between two loci. By looking at
inheritance patterns and recombination frequencies, this experiment showed that
white eyes, short wings and forked bristles are X linked traits. As well, dumpy
wings and brown eyes are autosomal traits. The expected ratio of a dihybrid cross
of 9:3:3:1, was used to determine linkage between two loci. This was then verified
using a chi square test. Through analysis of our results, linkage existed between
white eyes and short wings, as well as between short wings and forked bristles.

How long have you lived in West Hove?
I ve lived for many years in West Hove (more than I care to admit); I was born in
Brighton and brought up in South Portslade.
What do you most like about the area?
I like the fact that Hove nestles close to Brighton and remains the quiet neighbour;
when I was younger, we used to go clubbing in both Brighton and Worthing as we
were right between the two, though getting home before night buses existed was
always an adventure.
I feel lucky to live between the sea and the South Downs with some fascinating

Family Medicine is rooted in the notion that getting to know patients through
continuity of care will allow physicians to not only integrate care and prevent
disease, but also to improve patients quality of life. I am interested in the patient
centered setting in family medicine to take care of the whole person body, mind and
spirit. To me, family medicineis inspiring, challenging, and rewarding.
Prior to starting medical school, I volunteered at a free clinic in Durham, NC.
Although I did not have the skills at the time to provide medical advice and
treatment, I shadowed a group of Family Medicine physicians after completing my
duties at NIH triage. There all the patients were assigned to the primary care
provider, and their doctor had the chance to get to know them personally. By offering
continuity of care, the physicians were able to adequately and comprehensively
manage chronic disease, focus on prevention, and coordinate care in partnership with
other medical professionals. I was inspired by the selflessness and compassion of
physicians who commit to caring for the underserved and uninsured populations.
With the Trauma Surgery team in a hospital, I met Mike, an 83 year old retired
teacher, was brought to the ED after a drunk driver hit him while he was biking on
the street. Mike sustained a subdural hemorrhage as well as Central Cord

Birling doesn t feel guilty at all about this case, because he doesn t care. This

least im concerned it s happened more then eighteen months ago nearly two years
