different ways depending on the culture. American and Chinese culture differ in their
interpretation of what is acceptable or not in terms of behaviours in their respective
societies. Regarding silence, American women are much more encouraged to state
their opinion than Chinese women. With that idea in mind, Maxine Hong Kingston
shares her aunt s story and hers in No Name Woman, a nonfiction piece recalling the
author s personal experiences and reflections on traditional Chinese family. Silence is
present in many ways and has different purposes all throughout the story. In No
Name Woman, silence is used as a way to control behaviour.
The mother s emphasis on keeping this story a secret demonstrates how the aunt is
being punished for her impregnation. The story starts with a warning not to tell
anyone, setting an atmosphere of shameful secret even before learning about the
aunt s story. Punishing someone is a form of control over the individual being

hold of the ship during the Middle Passage, to the perception of blacks which also
holds the black body, and to the engrained idea of the masculine black body which
keeps queer black bodies in their own hold. In this paper, I will examine the
intersectionality of blackness and queerness which is being held in the wake of
slavery. The Zong, which carried hundreds of Africans to the New World began
this hold on the black body. The ship symbolizes the arrival of what we know
today, as the black body and the departure of ones known language. Surrounded by
water, the ship holds hundreds of bodies dying of thirst, ultimately dissolving their
previously known languages. In order to gain and maintain control over the black
bodies, the Europeans introduce the language of violence. According Sharpe, The
language of thirst and hunger and sore and heat, the language of the gun and the
butt, the foot and the fist, the knife and the throwing overboard (pg.69). Violence
has been embedded into the black community since the Africans were held in the
belly of the ship. During the voyage, many black bodies were starved, beaten, and

the caterpillar crawls away from Alice. However, the caterpillar turns into a butterfly
in the movie. This is significant to the plot in both the movie and book, because they

China is a land that contains an overpopulation crisis. With a current estimated
1.4billion people living in China, something needed to be done in order to lower the
birth rates and control the fast growing population. The solution the Chinese
government came up with was the one child policy. They set up a number penalties
and benefits in order to encourage the Chinese people to cooperate with this policy.
The predicted outcome was to reduce the birth rates and reduce their population,
which was ultimately affecting the Chinese economy. However, the one child policy

where more boys are being born than girls. According to China s 2000 census, there

In the snow country, spring is a time when people can re enter the world as the
snow that has engulfed their houses for the cold winter months begins to melt
away. It is a time when rains bring tiny sprouts of plants that have been forgotten
because the snow has covered them for so long. These new beginnings and
rebirths in nature are reflected in the relationship between Shimamura and
Komako. Shimamura sees Komako in the same way as the new sprouts budding
up from the ground, as an unspoiled creature that has just surfaced. He considers
Komako an amateur and refers to her as clean . Thus, he feels he needs to look out
for the new seed to make sure she grows safely. His protecting nature and her
dependence on him form the foundation of the friendship that develops as the
