Editor's Notes

  1. The administrative team is the backbone to any organization. Their skills are needed to carry out critical office tasks. Social learning is very crucial in workplace training because it is how employee learn from each other. Clark Quinn defines social learning as “ communicating, curation, discussing, collaborating, being transparent and developing a shared responsibility of how to work and play together” (Learnlet, 2016). The benefits of using social learning for workplace social media training introduce social will help avoid and alleviate potential problems. Also, using social learning as a problem solver serves a means to ensure that the organization’s goals and objectives are met. Finally, the social media tools presented reinforce their value by enhancing the admin team professionally by helping them to build relationships.
  2. Social learning is an informal way of learning from our employees by asking questions, sharing resources and made through observations. In the workplace, leaning socially helps the administrative team develop professionally, build and strengthens the workplace, enhance problem solving skills and boost employee productivity. Workplace social learning enables employees to take responsibility of their own personal learning, learn through social media tools such as Microsoft Teams, LinkedIn, Google Classroom and Facebook by fostering communication and collaboration across the organization. However, there are barriers to workplace social learning such as fear, intimidation, disruptions and conflicts. Much of the office day is spent answering phone calls, attending meetings and getting things done. This requires the entire workplace to refocus on the mission. Also, fear, intimidation and will arise when employees do not have the necessary skills to use social media tools.
  3. Effectively ensuring training for the organization’s administrative team is important to social learning. Effective communication, collaboration, participation and proper usage of social media tools are ways to avoid workplace dilemmas. Employees need to know and understand what is appropriate and not appropriate when using the internet. Ethical dilemmas will occur when employee post or share inappropriate information. Organizations must create and put in place a social media policy for employees to avoid ethical dilemmas. Also, the policy should be reviewed and updated annually to reflect the most current information on social media.
  4. Microsoft Teams is a powerful cloud based social media tool that enables users to collaborate, share files, create on-line meets, chat with other colleagues and serve as a hub for teamwork. Teams is a great tool for project- based learning and collaborate simultaneously on projects and assignments. Employees can make comments, suggestions, accept, reject or edit while the other users are viewing the documents. Teams also enables users to send “gifs, stickers, emojis in a group chat or in a one-on-one message. With a touch of a button, users can instantly go from group chat to video conferencing. Users can receive calls internally or externally. Although Microsoft teams grew in 2020, by the end of 2021, teams will limit the number of users on video conferencing to 10,000. The drawback to teams is that it only allows a user to create 250 teams, only 28K maximum limit for conversation’s post and only 250 members can remain on a private channel.
  5. The International Journal of Management stated, “Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is now widely seen as an increasingly significant concern for firms because of moral, relational and instrumental motives. Nevertheless, practical aspects and challenges associated with CSR development in firms remains only partially understood” (Fortis, 2018).
  6. Google Classroom does not take long for the average person to learn. An administrator can figure out the basics of Classroom usually in one training sitting, and can then start practicing in real use. Having a gmail is about all it requires to sign up. Adding students or users, depending on the purpose of the platform, is easy. They can add themselves through a shared code or the administrator can simply email each individually to sign up for the class. Aside from being free, which is a great feature for any social media tool possibly meant to bring financial gain back, the platform is easily accessible and easy to use. Posts are very straight forward, dated, and available with comments and instructions when needed. Adding in the complicated features such as a Google Doc., or creating an assignment through Google Surveys only really takes a one time learning curve as well. Classroom even supports add-ons through Google, such as Flubaroo, which will grade your assignments for you. This really leads into the greatest features of Google Classroom, and those are related to the fact that it is a Google service. Because of this, all of the other great tools of Google are very compatible with Classroom. As mentioned before, documents can be posted, but then the sharing and editing of those documents can be done the same as if you were only dealing with Google Docs. Classroom is the tool that brings them all together and organizes them in a collaborative location. Classroom also gains again from Google in that it receives strong support and servicing as we move forward. One particular add-on which really added value to Classroom again this past fall was Google Meet. Another Google program, which already existed, is now tied to educator accounts of Google Classroom to assist in the ability to provide remote learning opportunities for teachers and students. And finally, if something isn’t working, you can expect a company as big as Google to be on the issue as soon as possible. Downtime with Google issues is not something that lasts and when it comes to your needs in a social media tool, this is a great support.
  7. Empirical evidence supporting these pedagogical strategies will be offered based on two years of qualitative and quantitative data collected over four semesters from 192 graduate students. Finally, a model for continued pedagogical improvement in virtual classrooms will be articulated focusing on formative feedback, regular communication with students, flexible course design, and five key learning principles (constructivism, creativity, collaboration, choice, authenticity)” (Kay, 2018). This app is a set up learning environment where student can collaborate with one another completing assignment face to face conference leave messages as well as upload and download documents.
  8. Facebook which was started as a social app has transformed it’s capabilities from uploading pictures, video’s and other information to face time through messenger, as well as create groups for education or training. Using social media in the learning atmosphere has taken learning global connecting with people all over the world. The Turkish Online Journal of Distance Education stated, “students experienced anxiety and it was not easy for them to cope up with stressful moments. However, they concentrated in learning without any interference from Facebook and took active role in extra-curricular activities, sports and games. Mental health positively influenced students' engagement while Facebook use enhanced mental health. Therefore, it is recommended that educators should make use of Google Classroom, WhatsApp and Zoom to support students' engagement”(Ngussa, 2021).
  9. According to “Addition of Google Classroom, introduced in 2014, as a Learning Management System (LMS) has provided a basic, easy to use platform. This study tested its efficacy in teaching a biochemistry module to first year MBBS students in an Indian medical school. Students reported better access to learning material and supplementary teaching resources, helpfulness of immediate feedback, and learning outside of class environment”(Dash, 2014).  Social media and social learning is about collaboration towards a common goal and a relationship; therefore, must have all aspects of that. AANA Journal stated, “nationwide lockdown due to corona virus pandemic compelled the medical colleges to conduct online classes to compensate for the loss of academic period. Among all the available apps, Google classroom was found to be user-friendlier app with many built in features” (Sheelavant, 2020).
  10. When deciding whether to utilize Social Media for Social Learning purposes or collaboration or business growth, whatever the purpose, there needs to be considerable thought into what gain is going to look like. Choosing the correct social media tool is important, but understanding what is desired and what the tool can offer is the clarifying point. Many people do not maximize their tools potential because they picked what they thought was most popular for their consumer, easiest to manage, or the cheapest. However, there needs to be some kind of sacrifice and effort put into the tool and the procedure to get where you want to go. Twitter may be the easiest tool to manage from an administrator’s perspective, but it also may not be one that reaches out in all of the right ways for the goals of the business. On the other hand, while Facebook, or any other tool for that matter, may offer more options, if the manager only checks the tool or updates every now and then, things are not going to benefit anyone.
  11. When utilizing social media, the purpose matters. We just discussed that; however, we also want to last and grow over time. Technology and social media’s “image” really can make us think immediate results and immediate action is the identity of success. But the “social” in social media means that we are communicating and collaborating to reach some end that we all gain from, whether we are producers, consumers, teachers, students, administrators, etc.... We all need to have something to benefit from if we expect acceptance in the process. Too often, business owners bombard their consumers with information, updates, prices, sales, and quick deals in hopes of making an extra dollar. In education, the same things can happen. Teachers can load students with information that will never reach them realistically because it’s simply too much and it’s only coming from one direction. There is no flow of collaboration or communication, and there is no feeling of belonging or gain. Rather than a new menu every month, utilize social media to reach out to your existing partners and offer some relationship building opportunities. A simple Thank You may be the advertisement via your social media outreach that gains you in the long run more, rather than the quick sale, which is going to be a one time thing. Social media and Social Learning are not meant to be “bag grab” deals. They are here to enrich and offer lifelong learning again, only this time with an extended arm, far reaching into the world where you couldn’t get to before.
