● Monica has diagnosed bipolar disorder and also abuses substances when she’s
with Frank (dual diagnosis)
● Live in the South Side of Chicago, in a lower
income neighborhood.

● Ian is third from oldest, with a strong heart, protective, and, for a being a

● During season four, Ian returns home after being missing for quite some time
without a word to his family, who didn’t express major concern since “he’s 17 and
responsible” as Fiona repeatedly stated
● He impersonated his brother Lip to enlist in the army (trying to get away from a
heartbreak)
● Ian had gone AWOL from the army(after he had attempted to steal one of their
helicopters)

● It’s when Ian returns to Chicago that he begins expressing bipolar characteristics
that viewers can witness on screen
● He is found to working at a strip club, and shortly after is expressing hyper
sexuality to a dangerous level with strangers
● You can see a physical change in Ian’s appearance as well, his eye make up and
hair

● Concerned, Mickey calls Fiona and Lip, and the Gallagher’s quickly recognize the
patterns of mania and now depression as the same as their mother’s(Monica)
● The final straw is when Ian kidnaps Mickey’s baby during a manic episode, and is
found running from the cops, endangering the infants life, although that was
never Ian’s intention.

16. In the end...
● After Ian runs off with Yvgeny, he is examined and diagnosed with Bipolar
disorder
● Throughout the series, Ian goes on and off his meds, because he “isn’t broken,
[he] doesn’t need to be fixed, [he’s] just [himself]”
● Feels as though he can’t think as clearly, and his mother encourages him to be
himself
● Ian eventually takes his medication regularly and is able to be a
productive part of society
