• Explaining can be divided into three types:
1) Interpretative—What are local anesthetics?
2) Descriptive – How do local anesthetics work?
3) Reason-giving – Why are local anesthetics used?

– a clarity of structure and
– an interesting presentation

• Clarity of structure involves-
– Defining new terms in explicit language
– Delineating focal statements in logical sequence & with due
emphasis
– Using suitable examples
– Providing appropriate summary
• Interesting presentation involves-
– Fluency of expression
– Variation in voice
– Gesture
– Use of teaching aids

Tips for Clarity in Explaining
• Speak clearly, use pauses, don‘t go too fast.
• Plan, prepare and structure to give a clear, simple view of
a topic
• Make it understandable and clarify key points.
• Observe student reactions.
• Do not try to cover everything
• Check, you understand your own material

Generating interest
• Show your own interest/commitment to topic.
• The use of gesture, eye contact and vocal inflection can
increase expressiveness.
• Use of apt examples and analogies can generate interest
and understanding.
• Play on the intellectual curiosity of the audience through
the use of puzzles, problems and questions.
