This document defines and explains several key terms related to gender identity and sexual orientation. It describes bisexual as being emotionally, physically, and/or sexually attracted to more than one gender. It defines transgender as a person who experiences discomfort with the gender they were assigned at birth and transitions to reflect their gender identity. It also explains that homophobia is dislike or hatred of lesbians, gays, and bisexuals.

1. Bisexual
The ways in which people externally
communicate their gender identity to
others through behavior, clothing,
hairstyle, voice and emphasizing, de-
emphasizing or changing their body’s
characteristics. It is not necessarily an
indication of sexual orientation.
Gender expression
A person who, through experiencing an
intense, long-term discomfort resulting
from feeling the inappropriateness of
their assigned gender at birth and
discomfort of their body, adapts their
gender role and body to reflect their
gender identity.
Homosexual
A person who is emotionally, physically,
and/or sexually attracted to more than
one gender. Also called “bi”.
Gender binary
A person who is emotionally, physically,
and/or sexually attracted and committed
to the members or a gender or sex that is
the “opposite” or other than the one with
which they identify or are identified. Also
called “straight”.
Heterosexual
Thoughts, feelings, or actions based on
far, dislike, judgment, or hatred of
lesbians, gays and bisexuals or
transsexuals/transgender individuals.
Homophobia or Transphobia
A homosexual woman.
Transgender
This term is frequently used as an
umbrella term to refer to all people who
deviate from their sex at birth or the
binary gender system. Some transgender
people feel they exist not within one of
the two standard gender categories.
Transsexual
A person who is attracted to members of
what they identify as their own sex or
gender. The terms “lesbian, bi and gay”
are preferred by many in the LGBT
community.
Lesbian
A view of gender whereby people are
categorized exclusively as either male or
female, often basing gender on biological
sex.
