ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It is usually diagnosed in childhood and can persist into adulthood. Symptoms include trouble paying attention, difficulty controlling behavior, and being overly active. There are three presentations of ADHD - predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and combined. Behavioral therapy and medication are common treatments, with behavioral therapy recommended first for preschool-aged children. IEP and 504 plans can provide academic accommodations to help students with ADHD succeed in school.
