Sepsis has been defined several times over the past few decades as clinicians have struggled to precisely define it. The most recent consensus definition in 2016 defines sepsis as a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by the body's dysregulated response to infection. Quick SOFA (qSOFA) is a bedside assessment tool used to help identify patients with suspected infection who are at higher risk of poor outcomes, defined as altered mentation, respiratory rate greater than 22, or systolic blood pressure of 100 or less. Management of sepsis involves timely antibiotics, source control, fluid resuscitation, vasopressors as needed, and monitoring for de-escalation of care.
