2. SENTENCE
When we speak or write we use words. We
generally use these words in groups such as:
Imran is a good student.
“A group of words like this, which makes a
complete sense, is called a sentence.”
3. Examples
• Cats like milk.
• He is a poet.
• Ali gets up early in the morning.
• They do not play hockey.
• Are you happy?
• Alas! We have lost the match.
4. PARTS OF A SENTENCE
There are two parts of a sentence.
1. The Subject
2. The Predicate
The subject is somebody or something about
whom/which we are talking and the predicate is
the information given about the subject.
7. TYPES OF SENTENCES
kinds of sentences according to function are:
(a)Assertive / Declarative Sentences
(b)Interrogative Sentences
(c)Imperative Sentences
(d)Exclamatory Sentences
(e)Optative Sentences
8. Assertive / Declarative Sentences
• These sentences are also called statements.
• They tell us about facts ,opinions and other
statements.
• They end with a full stop.
9. Examples
• The sky is blue.
• He is a third grade student.
• We shall go to the zoo tomorrow.
• He is a doctor.
• Aslam has a program in the morning.
• They are working hard.
10. IMPERATIVE SENTENCES
• These sentences give a command o r an
advice.
• They may also contain a request.
• They usually end with full stop.
• The imperative takes no subject as 'you' is the
implied subject.
• If the idea or command expressed in an
imperative sentence is strong, it ends with an
exclamation mark (!).

12. INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES
• The interrogative sentence asks a question
• This type of sentences are usually ask to
someone.
• They end with a question mark (?)
Do you like cricket?
13. EXCLAMATORY SENTENCES
• These sentences show strong
emotions/excitement and sudden feelings.
• An exclamatory sentence may also contain an
interjection.
• They end with an exclamation mark (!).
Hurrah! We won the match

– What a beautiful day!
– You did a great job!
– I love the colour of your room!
– Ali won the prize!
– Thai is a huge whale!
– Alas! Her mother has died.
15. OPTATIVE SENTENCES
• These sentence express a wish or
prayer or entreaty .
For example:
May you be very happy.
Have mercy upon us, O’ lord!
Make him work hard.
