WHAT ARE SENSORS?
A sensor is a device that detects and responds to some
type of input from the physical environment.
The specific input could be light, heat, motion, moisture,
pressure or any one of a great number of other
environmental phenomena.
General Applications
• Good for many short distance, high resolution
applications
• Can be used to detect the presence or absence of
conductive material
• Good for long distance monitoring of machinery and
industrial devices
• Usually works well in extreme environments
• Touch sensitive elevators
• Cars, machines, aerospace, medicines etc.
Limitations
• Very short range of measurement
• Material being measured must be conductive
• Target must be larger than the sensor tip
• Can only measure displacement in relation to the sensor
TYPES OF SENSORS
• Capacitive
• Magnetic
• Photocell ( Reflective)
• Laser range finder
• Sonar ( typically active or passive)
• Radar
• Doppler effect
• PassiveThermal Infrared
CAPACITIVE SENSOR
• A capacitive sensor is a proximity sensor that detects
nearby objects by their effect on the electrical field
created by the sensor.
• Example: It is used for tolerance testing in mass
production, vibration measurement etc.
MAGNETIC SENSOR
• Magnetic sensor detect changes and disturbances in a
magnetic field like flux, strength and direction.
• Example: Squid, Fibre Optic
PHOTOCELL
• Photocell sensors are used to manage outdoor or indoor
lighting.
• This sensor automatically turns on the light when it gets
dark or they detect motion.
• To detect and measure light.
• Example: in tube lights for security purpose
LASER RANGEFINDER
• Laser rangefinders work using the concept of sensors.
The rangefinder emits laser beam at the push of a button.
The beam bounces off the distant object and rangefinder
calculates the distance.
• Example: It is used in Army and during golf, it is used to
measure the distance.
SONAR
• SOUND NAVIGATION AND RANGING abbreviated as
SONAR.
• Sonar is a technique that uses sound propagation to sense
objects under the surface of the water
• Example: submarine (safe navigation under water).
RADAR
• RADIO DETECTION AND RANGING abbreviated as
RADAR.
• RADAR is an electromagnetic sensor used for detecting,
locating, tracking and recognising objects of various kinds
at considerable distances.
• Example: detect airplanes, ships, spacecraft.
DOPPLER EFFECT
• The doppler effect is the change in frequency of a wave in
relation to an observer who is moving relative to a wave
source.
• Example: weather forecasting.
PASSIVETHERMAL INFRARED
• A passive infrared sensor is an electronic sensor that
measures infrared light radiating from objects in its field
of view.
• It is used for detection between 5-12 cm.
SENSORS INTEXTILE INDUSTRY
• The sensors are used in all kind of textile machineries but
widely used in machines such as air jet loom, auto coner
138, drawing frame etc.The major sensors used are
proximity sensor, inductive sensor, photoelectric sensor
and electronic module.
• Textronics sells sensor components and markets its own
line of clothes for personal monitoring under the brand
name “NuMetrexTM.”
