Dan Goldberg proposes to recreate 7 of his sculptures using 3D scanning and printing for his senior project. He will scan his original large ceramic, wood, plaster, and iron sculptures and print smaller resin or plastic versions. Goldberg will also create an original chessboard featuring the 3D printed sculptures as chess pieces arranged on walnut and maple squares. Upon completion, he will present the chessboard and pieces alongside photos of the original sculptures to demonstrate the replication process.

Senior Project Proposal Professor Roskin
For my Senior Project, my goal is to recreate 7 of my best sculptures, both old and
new, in a form of media technology that has begun to open new doors for
manufacturing and product design. I will be exploring the processes and precision
involved with scanning and printing three-dimensional objects in new medium. The
works that I plan on recreating will be printed in either wax, or plastic filament, and
resized on a smaller scale with a 2 ½ to 3 inch base. The original works that I have
created are quite large and are made of ceramic clay, wood, plaster, and iron.
Upon the completion of the 3D scanning and printing process, each piece will be
assigned a role.
For the second half of the project, I will be creating a large chessboard made from
walnut and maple (possibly mahogany), unique to my own design. The chessboard
itself will be either 24, or 30 inches from corner to corner, consisting of 64 2 ½ -
3inch squares. 32 of which will be walnut, and the other 32 maple. Each 2 ½ - 3 inch
square will compliment each knight, rook, pawn, bishop, queen, and king as
representation to previous and current work. Upon completion of the assignment,
the chessboard and pieces will be presented along side each larger work and
photographs to show the transformation process step by step.
