4. Definition of paste-
Paste can be defined as paste is a semisolid
dosage form intended for external application to
the skin. The paste are generally very thick and
stiff. They do melt at ordinary temperature and
thus from a protective coating over the area
where they are applied. They are used mainly as
antiseptic protective or soothing dressing which are
often spread on lint before being applied.
5. Bases used for preparation of paste.
1. Hydrocarbon bases. E.g. soft paraffin
and yellow paraffin.
2. Water miscible bases. E.g. Glycerin
3. Water soluble bases. E.g. PEG
6. Method of preparation of pastes-
paste are prepared by trituration and
fusion and trituration method just like
ointments. The trituration method is used
only in those cases where the base is liquid
or semisolid or solid in nature. These two
are methods has already discus in
ointments.
7. Different between paste and ointment.
PASTE OINTMENT
1. In paste contain large
amount of solid.
2. The paste is thick and
stiff.
3. The paste les greasy.

suspended/dissolved.

the paste should be stored in well closed
container and in a cool place so as to
prevent evaporation of moisture present in
the paste.
Paste should be stored and supplied in
container made of materials which do not
allow absorption or diffusion of the contents.

Definition of poultices-
Poultices can be defined as poultices is a
semisolid dosage form intended to applied
to externally its soft, viscous wet masses of
solid substance to the skin for their
fomentation action in order to provide
relief from pain or reduce inflammation or
to act as counter-irritant is called as
poultices.
